I have been reading on the net about all the fighting over in Iraq and I got a question about our military. Could somebody explain what a battalion, division, company, recon, brigade, 101st etc..., means and how they relate to each other.

I did some research and this is what I found 66.
The number is the groups identity or "family" name. The others are various divisions of manpower groups. The listing is below. This is for the army only. It will tell you how many men in each group.

squad - 10
platoon 16-44
company 60 - 190
battalion 300-1000
division there are diferent types

airborne 13,250
air assault 15,700
armoured 17,300
infantry-mechanized 17,900
lite infantry 11,500

brigade 3000 - 4000
corps - varies to meet situation

this info courtesy of the World Book and the ready reference service of my local library. Hope this helps.
