Ok, what happened?

Andy's post over best coverage got me thinking.

Back in the early 80's or so when cable came around I could not get enough Na$car. Now, eh take it/leave it. I still haven't watched, and more than likely won't, the last truck race. I used to plan the weekend around races, no more. Yes I have a DVR now but even way back I had a VHS recorder. And knew how to program it! Racing today just doesn't excite me as it once did. I'm not one for wrecks, having owned cars/trucks I know what it costs, even on a lower level, to fix.

I'm truly surprised that JPM, a B team if you will, was eating the lunch of Gibbs, Roush, and Hendrick who for sake of arguement are A teams. Fluke or not it was good to see another car out front.

cars that fit a common template, on a spec chassis, running a motor whose power is limited by dyno testing, mandated shock/springs. Where can a crew chief chea,,I mean use inginuity to gain a advantage?

Back in the 80's and into the 90's Chevy, Buick, Olds, Pontiac, Ford, Merc, Dodge and Plymouth. Every one a different body style and the racing was great.

Parity and mega teams will kill the sport. Just MHO, YMMV

You not the only one that feels that way. Before I wouldn't miss a race, now it doesn't matter and I don't have a DVR.

Are you me? I've never owned one (but have helped work on them), but agree with everything you say. Used to plan my weekend around races. Would even hurry up and mow the yard on Friday and get done what I could so that I knew Sunday was free to watch the race.

had this very conversation with a co-worker of mine this morning, i used to plan my sundays around the races. I didnt see a single lap of the race yesterday and could careless.

The cars arent fords or chevy's anymore, they are simpy Nascar "Stock Cars", you cant buy anything remotely like what is raced on Sundays. Frankly im surprised the manufacturers still put money in the sport.

I think NA$CAR has in fact gotten too greedy and in turn has ruined the sport. I'm tired of the same tracks, i wanna see more short track racing.

I plan my schedule based on what's happening at the local tracks! :beerbang::beerbang::beerbang:

Adding more rules hurts the sport as well. Just take a look at how Tony George destroyed the IndyCar Series this year and took what is traditionally some of the best racing and turned it in to the most boring form of racing out there. Look at how many fans are leaving NHRA because of the Countdown to 1 and their knee-jerk thousand foot rule.

How much less could you care?
What?
Oh, he meant he couldn't care less.

And, the reason for many is over saturation. Back in the day it was something special to see a race. Then when it came on regularly you still had some "characters" with which to make the racing exciting. Now you not only have a common template for the car but some would argue that except for a rare driver *cough*Kyle Busch*cough* that you have a common template for drivers as well.

Look at all the racing we are exposed to on TV. From go karts to Baja to Cup to those funny looking cars Danica drives. Most any day you can turn on the TV and with the right combination of channels see some sort of racing.

As to JPM, this new car is so "touchy" that what worked on the old car will send this one over the edge. His CC hit the combination right out of the box and they didn't have to do adjustments like the other teams. That's where having a CC like Knaus is invaluable. He seems to know how to adjust the car more times than not. And the result is 3 championships and a possibility of a 4th.

Then again some can just drive anything they get in.

I disagree somewhat

Bp If your last staqtement were true, it would leave out completely the COT.
Robby is a guy that would almost fill your statement. He seems to be able to drive almost anything. Except the COT.
From reading all the posts and watching all the COT races, and hearing what the talking heads have to say. I think the COT must be a handfull for anyone on any particular day.

JPM and his teams performance shouldn't surprise you, cause some of the lesser teams will throw everything they have to be competitive at the big races. JPM performance has improved this year, more likely because of JPM'S maturity into stock cars, and also the switch from Dodge to Chevy.

I'll never cease to be amazed at how many people I see that say that they've lost all interest in NASCAR and will never watch another race, yet come to a racing forum every day to complain about it.

Hey don't be talking bad about Andy like that. He's a good friend of mine, well he's a friend of mine, oh heck I sometimes read what he posts, OK if I weren't a moderator here I'd probably have him on ignore. ;)

Thing about Robby is that he's not experienced much luck in Cup regardless of the car. I think we can agree he can drive just about anything else but Cup. As to my statement I was referring to the guys we see year in year out in the Chase. And yeah I realize it's a combination of money and talent.

Racing gets into your blood as does gear oil into your shirt. It just doesn't wash right out. Takes a while, years normally. Many years.

I'll always be interested in Na$car although my interest and love of the sport at the top level seems to be diminishing each year. I'm no longer the fanatic I once was.

My son has expressed an interest, I might, maybe, just find a roller for the local streeter class, back to basics. But it'll be understood I'm not going to be working on it at 2 am,,alone. BTDT. Only way to learn how to drive is to build and maintain your own car. Old school.
