Starting on the pole at Indy while prestigious may not represent good fortune for raceday if history is any guide. In the 8 year history of the Brickyard 400 how has the pole sitter fared, a few stats to ponder.
In every Brickyard the pole sitter has led the first lap.
The least number laps led from the start was 2 (Mast in 1994) and the most was 39 (Ernie Irvan in 1997)
Five times the laps led at the start were the only laps led by the pole sitter. Mast in 1994, Gordon in 1996, Irvan in 1997, Rudd in 2000, and Spencer in 2001.
The pole winner has never won the Brickyard 400
The best finish from the pole was 3rd, Gordon in 1999
The worst finish from the pole was 37th, Gordon in 1996
Finishes from the pole:
Average - - 11.25
Top 5 - - 1
Top 10 - - 4
Top 20 - - 5
Over 20 - - 3
