On the Pole in 2003

There have been 12 different Pole winners in 2003, Ryan Newman (4), Bobby Labonte (3) and Steve Park (2) are the repeat Pole winners this season

Beginning in 1996 a ROTY candidate has won a pole every season until now. So far a rookie driver has not captured a pole in 2003.

Beginning in 1987 there has been a first time pole winner every year, including this one. That is 17 straight years.

What does it mean to start on the pole as far finishing this season?

The average finish of the pole winner this season is 15th..........

The pole winner has only won twice this year.....Ryan and Jeff

The race winner has started 30th or worse 3 times.

The pole winners have more DNF's (3) than victories so far this year

The average starting position of the race winners this season is 11.4

Half the time it is best to be among the top 5 qualifiers....those spots have won 9 races so far.

Starting from 6th to 10th is not as good, only two winners in there; both started from the 9th spot.

The hot ticket so far this year is to start 4th. The eventual race winner has started fourth on four occassions so far, no other starting sport has yielded more than two.

Whatever you do, do not start in a position in the 20's. No winner so far has come from positions 20 - 29.

Who are the best qualifiers so far this year?? Only two drivers have an average starting spot of less than 10th. Amazingly those two drivers have an identical starting average of 8.39..................Who ya reckon??

Newman and Mikey

no real knowledge behind these pics, they just seem start up front a lot...

I reckon to Brooke at one time!

But yep, that is the one.

Both Ryan and Jeff have 13 top 10 starts this season. Tony Stewart has 12 and Elliott Sadler has 10. Those are the only drivers to post double digit top 10 starts so far.

Matt Kenseth, leading the points by starting in an average postion of 21.7.

Of course, Newman is the obvious one. 4 poles and all. I couldn't decide on my guess between B.Labonte and J.Gordon.

Looks like winning the pole is only good for getting the first pit selection.

Very interesting facts and figures, HS.
You know, this brings up a question I've had for a long time....

Historically what is the average start to finish ratio of all the positions???

Some made up numbers for and example:

Start -------On average will Finish
1 --------- 1.9
2 --------- 2.7
3 --------- 2.8

I would like to see how much of advantage pole has, since it seems that very rarely does the pole actually end up winning the race....

I personally feel like somewhere around 5th is the best place to start...but that is just PURE hunch.....if anyone has real data that would be keen!

That would be a pretty monumental stats task splunge.

I don't think you would or should go back over about 5 years though...the game has changed a lot over time. Unfortunately my databases won't sort out the info that way.

If I have a few spare days to work on it mebbe....LOL
