One car - One track

Windtunnel posed a pretty good question this weekend:

If you could do a hotlap in one car, on any one track in the world, what would they be?

Man, I've thought long and hard about this on more occasions than I can remember since I've been into racing. It's so tough to narrow it down to just one choice.

But having only one chance to do this, I'd have to go with the Shelby Cobra 427 on the Monaco Grand Prix curcuit.

I's be split between a Daytona Prototype around Spa-Francorchamps or an ALMS P1 around Circuit de la Sarthe.

lamborghini murcielago lp640 at Nurburgring. Might as well make it a long lap.

I have 3:

SSC Ultimate Aero @ Nurburgring Nordschleife (same reason as Chromehorn)

Daytona Prototype @ Singapore GP race course.

Le Mans P1 @ Shanghai International Speedway.

I lived my fantasy last year when I drove an indy car around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for 3 laps.:)

Aston Martin V12 Vantage, Aston Martin DBSV12, or Audi R8(cant decide), around Talladega.

for me no brainer, Dale Earnhardt's 1990 plate car. I'd want the same style driver uniform, open face helmet, & low sitting seat...

Nurburgring Nordschleife

This seemed to be the most popular track choice on Windtunnel.

I was surprised that a lot of people chose dirt tracks. One guy went so far as to say that (I'm paraphrasing here) "A Ferrari at Nurburgring Nordschleife seemed like a good choice, but then I realized it takes some serious nads to run the high line at Eldora."

If you're going to have only one lap, might as well be worth it, right?

Except that you can't actually go racing at Nurburgring Nordschleife.

It's a one-way toll road, and there really aren't any enforced speed limits. However, if you cause a crash and the investigation finds that you were "racing" a timed lap, you could be arrested. If the police find a timing device in your car, your insurance is void. Leaving you liable for any and all damage.

Plus, the entire track is monitored by police. If they determine you are driving dangerously, even if you haven't caused a crash, you can be fined and/or banned.

EDIT:
Just to clarify, I think that's why they should make it a closed track. In other words, make it into a paid roller coaster for car lovers. Let them go balls out, one at a time on the course. Drive at your own risk sort of thing. The way it is now, it's little more than a Sunday drive. Which has it's own appeal, I suppose.

Even LeMans is still open legal road (my friend's dad has driven on it). Only the double chicanes, front straight, and the first couple turns are closed course, as well as the micro-le mans behind the paddock. I think?

78 BABY BLUE FORD PINTO around Hickory Motor Speedway with a bumper sticker that says, "don't laugh it's paid for!!"

That's just my 2 cents.

I think it's enough of a legendary track that it should no longer be used as a public road. Same for Circuit de la Sarthe (Le Mans).

It's not unusual to see things like motorhomes and even tractors on these roads. Mixing these with sport bikes and Ferraris is a disaster waiting to happen. I don't know about la Sarthe, but every year at Nordschleife there are dozens of accidents. Some of them fatal.

hmmm.... i could think of a couple..... First would be a race prepared Shelby GT 500 with added Holman Moody parts:growl: at Laguna Seca..... Don't ask me why, but I love that track in the Gran Turismo series.......
The other, just for white nuckled, pucker factor, a Barry Wright, Clements powered super late model at Bulls Gap!

Well Le Sarthe is an intregal part of the city- if you look on the map, the long back stretch connects two roundabouts....

Turns 1, 2, 3, 3a, and 3b go along D323. It then joins public road Route de Tours, which becomes the Musulanne straight (the back straight) and bypasses the "Giratoire de Cesar" roundabout. One chicane is right before roundabout D92, the other by the intersection with Boulevard de Grands Rotis. The track goes right, to avoid roundabout D140. Then it goes west around the roundabout of Route de Tours and Boulevard de Italiens, where the closed course seperates from public road and passes the 2 go-kart tracks to the finish straight.

I wonder why no one has mentioned Ehra-Lessien, Volkswagens testing facility. There is 60 miles of track of every conceivable track condition and includes a circuit of 12 miles where the Bugatti Veyron was clocked at 253 mph. I don't know if I would dare to take that challenge, but give me a any good race car and any good road course would work for me.

I don't care how powerful it is, IMO this has got to be the fugliest supercar ever made. It looks like the sort of thing Ferrari would make if their designers were stoned out of their minds.

I have to agree with you on that respect. However, when you have to have 10 radiators and be aero enough to actually be able to go 250 mph, I don't think that looks enter into that.
