The "good old days" ??
According to Jimmy Spencer, NASCAR will no longer use the mechanical fuel pump that has caused problems for many teams. They are hard to prime if they suck in a little air from the tank.
Spencer said on the hub that they are going back to an electronic fuel pump (just as I predicted) and the old squirt bottle will be no more. The pumps will also be much better at picking up all the fuel, even if they grab some air. Cars will self prime and be easier to start after running out of gas.
It does open up a slight problem. Teams could install firmware changes that will allow them to use the injector timing and duration as a precise fuel meter. This could save teams a bit of money paying engineers to calculate fuel usage, something smaller teams can't afford.
I think NASCAR should allow it. Then a fuel mileage race will be about filling the tank and the drivers skill at saving fuel. No realtime reading of fuel usage, just a dash light that indicates 1 gallon remaining.
