It was difficult to look at 200,000 fans packed into Daytona Speedway and not imagine that auto racing has become one of America's favorite sports. According to a recent Gallup poll, however, auto racing isn't very close. The pollsters asked Americans to name their favorite sport. Football was the easy winner with more than 43% of the voting. Basketball was second with 12% and baseball followed with 11%. Auto racing landed fourth with just 4%. The poll results didn't mean that only 4% of Americans follow auto racing, only that 4% found it to be their favorite sport.(Alabama Live)(2-20-2007)

I wonder why a report that I saw said that NASCAR has sold more hats and T-shirts in the past 5 years than the NFL and the NBA combined??

I would say that there are several contributing factors to that.

First of all, most other sports sell far more jerseys than they do t-shirts. Your typical NASCAR fan is also simply a more likely person to wear a hat out in public. Another factor is that NASCAR drivers change their paint schemes and sometimes even their teams a lot more often than their counterparts in the other sports. I can't tell you how much Jeff Gordon stuff I still have somewhere with the old rainbow warrior scheme. I have a bunch of Kyle Petty stuff from his days with the Sprint paint scheme too.

I would have to say that NASCAR is really going to give the NFL a run for it's money. If not this year then very very soon I mean a few million people can't be wrong right?

I have been watching racing since I was little and going to races too. Weather it be sitting in the stands at the Local Dirt Track on friday night or standing up at Daytona when a pack of 43 cars come by stacked up 3 wide 7 rows deep at 185mph.

Racing is in my opinion is the best sport out there. I list my Fav. Sports like this....

1. Racing
2. Hockey
3. Bicycle Stunt
4. Arena Football
5. College Football

I would imagine the reason is because the other sports are played on many levels:

Football, Baseball, and Basketball are played, basically:

High School........College.......and .......Professionally (NFL / MLB / NBA
And not to mention all the Little League, Legion, kids just having fun, etc that does not exist to those extents in racing.

It's not my favorite and I'm a pretty hardcore fan.

1. NFL
2. NASCAR
3. College football
4. Arena football
5. everything else except hockey
6. hockey

Since others are listing theirs, mine would be something like...

1. Basketball
1a. Football
3. Baseball
4. NASCAR
5. Golf

NASCAR was higher on the list years ago, but my passion has slightly eroded over time. Anymore, the Browns are horrible but I am still more likely to watch more of them than the race when they are on at the same time.

My top 5, not a hockey or baseball fan. but i have been wanting to go to a hockey game just to give it a shot, but i can not stand baseball, or really soccor.

1) Dirt Track
2) Monster Trucks
3) NAPcar :p
4) College Basketball (in person)
5) NFL (prefer in person)

Sports that I watch religiously:
  1. College Football
  2. College Basketball
  3. NASCAR
  4. NFL
  5. MMA
  6. Arena Football

Sports that I occasionally watch if I'm at someone else's house and its on so as not to be rude:
  1. Baseball

Sports that I never watch even if you gave me the ticket, drove me to the game and bought all of the food and drink I could handle.
  1. NBA
  2. Hockey
  3. Soccer

1. Nascar at Bristol
2. College Football
3. Other Nascar Oval events
4. NFL
5. Nascar Road Races
6. College Basketball
7 thru 100 -Other sports
101. Figure skating :D :D
103. MLB (if it's the 7th game of the world series):D :D

And no I don't like figure skating but it's shows where MLB stands

Jason

But do you like the figure skating shows where it is the bloopers? I watched one recently that was all drops. Really hilarious.

I disagree. NASCAR had a chance to overtake the NFL a few years ago. But with some of the recent changes, a growing number of fans are being turned off.

The popularity of football (college and pro) is fueled by gambling. I love football and can watch it almost all the time, just like racing. But there are so many people that follow it because of the gambling aspect than being an outright fan.

Now, if NASCAR became more heavily gambled on, then I could see another surge in popularity.

ANYTHING NASCAR
Rodeo
PBR
Polker tournaments
Olympics
Does it compete? I'm all for it!

I haven't added my favs, but this is hard for me to figure out. I'll just be generic but you can get the drift.

Racing, any motorized form including boat racing and swamp buggies
Football
Golf
Winter Olympics

I'd add hockey, but I now only like it in person and since it's been a long time since I attended a hockey game, I'm leaving it off. For anyone who hasn't gone to a hockey game, once you see it in person, I can tell you that you can get hooked very easily.

He shoots...he scoreeeeees!

Swamp buggies and beer and a Saturday afternoon........ sounds good.:beerbang:

I just thought of something...with this sport being such a southern sport and all, I've not seen too many people list fishing. Now that is where you can give me a beer and a cane pole and I'll enjoy a very lazy afternoon. :beerbang:

1. auto racing
1. off-road racing
1. tractor pulls
1. boat racing
1. racing that involves any non-mentioned vehicles equipped with an engine
50. High School Football (in person)
100. soccer
100. any ball sport not previously classified

..something in along those lines.

Polker IS a sport because it is a competition that pays very well.

We will just have to agree to disagee :) , I just do not see poker as a sport. It might pay well, but still dont have it a sport in my word. There is no real risk to harm, It is not very physical, I could go on, but i just dont see it.

We need "Spell Check"!

*note to self, ADD FISHING!* Kat just loves salt water fishing and baits her own hooks!

Poker is most certainly not a sport.

In my opinion anything that you get better at the more you drink is not a sport. ;)

i know its wrong.. whys the NBA worried about making money if its the 2nd fav sport in America... i think the sampling was a little off..
