Hey, I know several of you out there use OS's other than Windows and Macs. I'm about ready to take the plunge and get away from Microsoft. Don't really want to go with Mac since I would need a complete new computer system.....plus you can't build your own using the Mac OS. So, I'm thinking about the only OS left is probably Linux......which I've heard nothing but praises for. Problem is, there are so many different versions (or builds or whatever).......which ones do you, who have Linux, use? Which would be easiest, yet powerful to get used to? I'm thinking of SuSE 8.0......is it a good choice?

Suse...doesn't have a very easy installation system. You would need to know your computer by heart...be able to assign IRQ's and interrupts manually as opposed to the OS finding your hardware and configuring it for you.

I would go with either Redhat or Mandrake. I use Mandrake, was very good for learning but think that I have outgrown it.

oh god..double greek to me too..............

I'll stick with my ME for now........let DE do all the tinkering with his computer.........:) :)

I am fortunate enough to have a guy who does the Engine building for me.;) I just drive this keyboard.:)

Okay,Paul.......that's what I wanted to hear. I've heard good things about all the versions. Redhat I've heard is sort of limited in what you can do.

So, Mandrake is a good learning Linux system? How or where do I get a browser? Is is part of Mandrake? If not how would I get to their website to download a browser? I'm planning to using PartionMagic to create a couple partitions on my hard drive and do the dual boot stuff so I could use ME to browse and download any thing I might need, I guess.:)

Thanks.

I'm the same way Pbunch..DE builds mine and I just drive them:D :D :D

Cutiepie, the internet search wizard of all time has just sent me about 10 Mandrake Linux web pages to read up on via email........got to go check it out.:)

Be back a little later.:D

DEW, browsers and email clients and text editors and AIM and ICQ and everything you would need will come installed on your Mandrake system.

Mozilla, the best browser is what I use...and it will be installed. Once you start the installation process you'll see how easy it all really is. It's easier to install Linux than it is to install Windows.

:)

Yer using ME? Junk that and get something different, even if you have to go backwards. I heard just today that at a Microsoft conference, one of Microsoft's people got up in front of the crowd and asked if anyone out there was still using ME. He said that on behalf of Microsoft, he appologized for it. Seems that ME was actually more of a Beta that was released way too soon. You do of course understand all this...right? :)

My ME is just fine for me.

Hi Paul............

De is reading about it now on the net and he appreciates all the help.....looks like he is pretty excited about it........
:)
Thank you Rayna

Well, I guess you get used to what you have. I'm still using a P4 400 Mhz machine using Win 98 1st edition. I'm also using IE 6.0 and not having any trouble there, whereas the pros tell me that I should be having all sorts of problems. :satisfied

What do you think about XP?:)

XP is pretty good.

Kat, all you do is talk about all your millions of computer problems each day. ME is known to be complete and utter junk.

2+2=?

I loved win 98...it took me a long long time to finally switch to ME...........sometimes I wish I had stayed with 98.......:)

It's what you have to have now days unless you are going out on a limb and trying something different such as Linux or switching to a MAC. When I get another computer, it will of course have XP on it, but I am going to then install Win 2000 on this machine. XP is a bit too intrusive for me, though you can turn off all that crap if you know how. As for an OS, XP is just Win 2000 for the home user. Win 2000 replaced Windows NT which was mainly for business.

ok great...just wanted to get your imput on XP.......
boy, all this stuff..wonder what it will be like in 10 years, 20 years............what we will be running, what computers will be like..etc............

Hey, in ten years, our computers might not cost us much at all. This old machine cost me more than the best on the market right now, and I can get a biiiiiiiig monitor, printer, camera, etc. It's amazing how the prices have come down. The decline started right after I bought this thing. :(

boy thats for sure...hey..my first computer I got in 1997..believe it or not..it cost 3 thousand dollars, it was a compaq.......well my first new computer, before that I got started with all this with a 40 dollar garage sale computer, thats how it all began........had nothing but DOS on it.....
then I went a next step, bought a 500 dollar computer at a computer store with windows 3.1........then the compaq..was next..I was so thrilled when I turned it on and saw windows 95.....I was speechless with everything.,..but 3 grand for a computer...lot of money......got a HP after the compaq for 800 dollars, then after that DE built my now computer and I love it...........best one I have had yet...........and they keep getting better and better..........:)

so far.......DE is very impressed with mandrake..........:)
I bet by next weekend he has linux installed on his computer.........:D

Okay.......just read about 8 different websites on Mandrake, Redhat and a little on SuSe! I'm impressed!:) Figure I'm going to go with Mandrake. Seems to be the best for newbies.:) Probably go to Fry's (a local, yet big electronics store here in So Cal) and see if I can get Mandrake 9.0......the newest distribution.:) I can download it for free, but I like the disks in hand.....I screw around way too much to go with downloaded stuff!:) If you guys only knew how many times I've gotten my machine so screwed up that format and reinstall is the only fix!!:(

Thanks for all the input.:D

Don't even mention reformat and reinstall. Oh how I hate that. I'd rather buy a new machine than do that, but it has to be done now and then. Experts say you should do it at least twice a year. Sure makes your old computer like new again though.

Not so much this year.........but last year I reformated and reinstalled everything 5 times!!:(

Paul, if you're still around......a quick question. Cutie and I are networked through a router and connected to the internet with a cable modem. I'm sure Mandrake can handle that since it is used as a server OS, but would you think it would be a headache to configure?

DEW, it probably shouldn't be a problem at all.

About downloading it. Once you download the .iso files...you burn them to a disc and then you will have the discs in hand! :)

But, these companies could use the money...because people like me certainly aren't paying. But yeah, once you download those files you just burn them onto a disc and it's just like you bought the cds.

Boy am I PO'd!:( I purchased Power Quest's "Partition Magic" yesterday so I could partition my hard drive to prepare for installing Linux on my computer. That damned program is not what it's said to be......it has no help except a cheap PDF file that is barely readable. It answers almost no questions or helps in any way for a problem I experienced when I first tried to run it. I get an error message about libraries not be loaded and the program will close. The only "solution" offered is to restart your computer.....I did that a few times. No help. Reinstalled it.......uninstalled it and reinstalled it again.......total of three times! Online help.......nothing about it!!::( Seems when I exit the the installation program, it is supposed to take me to a configuration utility.......it doesn't do it!! Guess an irrate phone call to Utah is on my agenda tomorrow when I get home from work. That damned program cost $69.99!!
