I am writing an arguement essay at school. I wanted to get oppinions from other people on this subject. I think races should have stayed in NOrth Wilkesboro, Rockingham, and Darlington because this was the grass roots of NASCAR, and the historical value of the tracks.

What do you think? Also what were the dates or years the tracks closed or lost the events? And where were they resechueled.

Those races were moved for one reason: money. Rockingham never had a sellout, they were an easy target. But they also had crappy dates. It's in the middle of nowhere. North Wilkesboro was up for sale and was bought by two other track owners looking for dates for their own tracks. It had limited seating capacity and was maxed out as far as usable space. The second Darlington was moved to California to get more exposure for the L.A. market. Darlington was rarely a sellout (reason given for the move), but California has been the same.

I don't have that much of a problem with Darlington only having one date. The racing there is usually so-so. But I do wish they'd take their one date and move it back to Labor Day weekend. Rockingham had character, seemed like a fun track to drive. North Wilksboro was a neat little track, but NASCAR outgrew it. Still, I miss it too.

Answer's easy enough. Money, isn't that NA$CAR's motive for anything?

They moved the tracks to megaplex raceways in large markets that could seat twice as many people and could charge twice as much for tickets because people would come pay to watch the races at the shiny new megaplex sports arenas.

North Wilkesboro closed in October 1996. Rockingham closed in May 2004, but is operating again, owned by former ARCA and NASCAR driver Andy Hillenberg. They reopened in May 2008 with the ARCA Carolina 500, which Joey Logano crushed the opposition in his first career start to claim his first career win from the pole.

I think with teh COT, they could run the smaller tracks. WaaSCAR has them sowed down so much, should make for good racing again... Just my .02 though... BRING BACK THE LITTLE GUY LOL

Thanks MRM, I know Bruton Smith and Bob Bahre bought N.W. But I loved that track because it had a unique layout with uphill/downhill effect which no other track has. It is ashame to let a good short track go. They could have made it better by doing what they did to Bristol instead of building a whole new facility. Thanks and have a good day.

PS. Just remember the good ole boys like Fireball Roberts.

50 years old and back in school. That must be tough. Remember Google is your friend. You can get all kinds of stuff with a good search engine. Just remember not to copy and paste but to put the info in your words. Oh, and don't forget spell check is also your friend.

Rick, here's a reason that no one has mentioned, but come close. Today's NASCAR has to cater to corporate sponsors and if you have ever been to one of these races, you'll know exactly what I mean. These people don't just come to the track and then go home, it's a good two or three day experience and let's face it, big corporate people aren't going to tailgate for two or three days. So they need good facilities that will not only house those people, but also have plenty of entertainment for them as well. Darlington is close to Myrtle Beach, but that is still a good distance off, but would work in a pinch. Maybe that's why they still have a date there, people are still afraid that one day they will lose that date. North Wilkesboro is 45 miles from Winston Salem, and though there are plenty of things to do there, it's very limited. Rockingham has...well, I guess you could drive an hour to Charlotte, but then there already is a race or two there. Curently there are two tracks that have similar problems, but they are kind of unique. One of them is always on the table of losing one or both races, but the other is like an icon in NASCAR and they wouldn't dare take a date away from Bristol...now would they? Martinsville is lucky enough to be a tough little half mile track and that is what is keeping it on the circuit, but as mentioned, talk about it losing at least one of it's dates never ceases. And of course, all this adds up to what others have said and that is money.

Thanks Buckaroo, Would you like to see these track back in action again or preserve them for the history?

There has been talk for some time now that N. Wilkesboro would be bought and reopened, but the longer it goes without any repairs, the more money it would take to get it up and running, and it always seems that those who have intentions of buying are only dreaming. We had season tickets to that track and it was sad to watch the last race.

I read the tax value is around 7.25 million dollars. The problem is Smith wants around 12 million or better and a clause for no races to be held there.

whats sucks about rockingham is after sitting so long when arca finally went back racing there it was a boaring race so now people will use that as an arguement for not going back there. But i am one of the people who miss that track. Never understood why these guys with money dont build more tracks like bristol when they see how it sells out and is well known on the circuit. Its all about 1.5 mile tracks.
