The O'Reilly MLRA 2006 Thunder Tour kicked things into gear with night 1 of the North/South Shootout at Lakeside Speedway and when the smoke cleared "Mr. Smooth" Billy Moyer picked up the $3000 winner's check.

From the drop of the green flag Moyer set out to show that he was the man to beat as he quickly jumped to the front of the pack from his pole position holding off outside front row starter Jason Bodenhamer with Kyle Berck and Scott Drake battling it out for the third spot. Just six laps into the event Bodenhamer slowed and exited to the pits with due to a power steering failure in his new Larry Shaw Race Cars mount. With Berck and Drake attempting to pressure Moyer for the lead the man on the move was Kelly Boen who moved into the top 10 after rolling off in the 18th starting position. While Boen worked his way through the field Moyer began to extend his lead leaving Berck and Drake to battle for the runner up position behind him. A couple of yellow flags bunched up the field and negated the full straight lead that Moyer had built up and allowed Boen to continue his charge towards the front as he made several daring moves. Finally catching Berck and Drake, Boen made a three wide move in the middle to pass both drivers and move into second only to have the move nullified by a yellow flag. On the restart Boen quickly moved back around Berck and Drake and began to reel in Moyer looking to take over the top spot. The wheels came off the Boen charge literally three laps from the end as Boen suffered mechanical failure and lost the right rear wheel in turns 3 & 4 ending his night. Over the final three laps Moyer opened his lead back up and race under there checkered flag for his 31st O'Reilly MLRA win and first since 2004 at Mid America Motor Speedway. Following Moyer across the line were Berck, Drake, Chris Smyser, and 20th starting Terry Phillips.

Fifty-one cars signed into the Lakeside Speedway with Alan Vaughn, Billy Moyer, Scott Drake, Kyle Berck, Will Vaught, and Jason Bodenhamer taking home the six heat wins. Mike Brown and Kelly Boen copped the wins in the two B features that set up the nights main event.

I feel very fortunate to have seen Mr. Smooth, Billy Moyer race. That was way back in either '93 or '94 at Farley Speedway in Iowa.
