Fox's broadcast of Sunday's DHL 400 Nextel Cup race from Michigan International Speedway drew an overnight rating of 4.0 and a 10 share from Nielsen Media Research, today's Sports Business Daily reports. The rating represents a drop of 11.1 percent from the 2003 race, which drew a 4.5/11 overnight and a final 5.4/16. This year's race trailed both the third and fourth rounds of the U.S. Open golf championship on NBC in the ratings from the nation's largest television markets.(NASCAR Scene Daily Newsletter)

I think this is a direct reflection on the NASCAR's inability to get it's act together. If it continues, then the TV ratings are going to slip further.

It shows the overall rating trend for all racing in the US, just look at the IRL and Cart ratings to see the same trend...also each week I'm seeing more aluminum hats in the stands than in past years...maybe it's the overall state of the economy or the cost of going to a race-tickets, food etc.

Well, maybe some of the fans that claimed to be so disenchanted with NASCAR not to watch races this year are really doing just that.

I get ticked at some of their calls sometimes, but not enough to drive me away. At this point IMO it is still the best show in town. I'll attend whenever possible and watch every week I can't.

I'll second that. Racing is the only sport I'm interested in seeing.

Maybe the rating was a one week occurrence? I'd read a book before I'd watch golf. -_- -_-

Edit: Anyone know what the YTD ratings are (compared to last year)?

I'm not sure, and I'm sure one of the resident statatitions will have the exact figures. But I believe it's real close to these numbers.

Golf????? Isn't that kinda like watchin grass grow or paint dry???? LOL
Give me racin. If it gets too tame, I just nap.
But you won't see me leaving the sport!!!!!
I have to agree with Eagle1 here.

Anyone remember when FOX and NBC took over the broadcasting rights a few years ago? They both really hyped the racing in NASCAR and drew a huge crowd of "newbies" to the sport. Well, the way I see it is that that big increase included a fair number of what I call "fad seekers". I said that back then. I also said that there would a leveling out or even a decrease in fans as those "fad seekers" moved on the something else that is the newest craze. And that is how I interpret what's happening this year. Overall, the sport gained tremendously, but the initial increase was only temporary. Now, over the next 5 to 10 years we will see if NASCAR can maintain a more modest and permanent increase in viewership............I think it can!! :D

I'm not worried. :)

I never looked at ratings much in the past. Are nascar's ratings substantially affected during the football season?

I think so Smack..........at least that's been said before and I wouldn't doubt it myself. I'm pretty sure NASCAR racing on Sundays is here to stay for a while. :)
