Paint schemes

Probably you guys have already talked about this, but as I mentioned before, I´ve missed some years of being able to follow the races and now I´m trying to brush up on the new things.

What´s up with these new paint schemes? Whose idea was this?

I´m having a tough time because back in my days, you would easily recognize your favorite drivers because of a "steady", same-all-season-long paint scheme, but now...

Last night for instance I was looking for German Quiroga´s light blue Net10 Wireless Truck and I couldn´t find him anywhere! Now I know he was driving a black & yellow OtterBox truck...what´s up with this? Isn´t it much more expensive for teams to change the schemes for the cars and for the outfit of the crew members and the trailers and the motor homes, and everything? Isn´t it much more difficult for fans to follow their fav drivers?

Thx.

Easy enough to answer ---- MONEY. Sponsors aren't forking over the dollars necessary for a full season, so teams sign up multiple sponsors. Even the so-called "big money" teams in Cup have few full season sponsors.

WOW!

Kinda hard to believe that Nascar teams are not making ends meet...

With the advent of car wraps changing the paint scheme is pretty cheap. I'm guessing marketing loves it and more companies can get their name on the car. But for me I loose the driver/brand identity. I look for certain color schemes of my favorite drivers and when I can't find them I'm annoyed.

I used to like it when teams would roll out a special paintjob for Daytona (either race) or Charlotte, or the All-Star race or something. But, not a fan of the sponsors changing every week.

I am not a fan of sponsors period. I like to look at the car design and cool paint, but that went away in the 70's, now they are a rolling billboard.

It's nothing new and has been going on since the early- or mid-00's. As Zerkfitting notes, it's just become easier now that cars are wrapped instead of painted. That allows teams to offer more partial season and one-race sponsorship deals.

It used to annoy me. If that's what it takes for a team to stay on the track, I'm over it.

I can get a wrap for a dirt late model for less then $500, so a cup car cant not be that much more.
Not much more at all. In total, if the entire car changes color/scheme, it will run a couple grand - but only because there are typically at least 5 full kits that are ordered (which makes sure multiple cars can be wrapped, as well as a couple backup decals just in case).

The varying paint schemes may be one reason the cars now have the driver's name on the windshield. You never know what color or sponsor a car will carry from one week to the next. Take Carl Edwards for example. So far this year, he's had Fastenal, Subway, Kellogg's, and UPS on his car, can't remember if he's run Aflac this year or not.

I have come to the conclusion that most of NASCARs problems are caused by giving in to Sponsor demands. These corporations have ripped the soul out of the sport and replaced it with a marketing message.

You guys do a good job, I like how the #78 looks. Looks almost matte black sometimes on TV. Sharp looking race car.

got that right. There doesn't seem to be a solution that I can see, the most money will find a way to spend it on a race car.

Fastenal - 18 races
Subway - 5 races
Best Buy - 4 races
Aflac - 4 races
Frosted Flakes - 2 races
Cheez-it - 2 races
UPS - 1 race

Seven different primary sponsors lol.

Roush is the one who started that crap to begin with, even before the economy went bad.

Wonder if on the 78, if it is not painted and stickers. ive noticed a lot of the "simple" looking cars are not wrapped, but painted with a few decals

Dont forget Ford EcoBoost (or if rumors are correct, Cargill) at Homestead).

I remember the first time I saw Dale Sr's car with an alternate paint scheme wayyy back in 95 when he ran the silver Goodwrench car, thats what pretty much set it off. Alternate scheme's started showin up at the AllStar & the Busch Clash & then all of a sudden they were appearing in regular races as well. I personally kinda like the alternates. I remember Jr's Busch series Looney Tunes scheme that he won in at Richmond back in like 02 sometime. I think one of my favortite alltime schemes was Jeff Gordon's 98 Chromalusion car, now that was a hott car, fast to, shame he didn't win the race...

Is it just me on does Gordy have crappy luck in alternate paint schemes? He obviously had troublr in the Chromalusion car but he also wrecked driving Nicorette, Retro Pepsi, Blue Dupont. Exceptions obviously hare 20 years of DuPont and Jurassic Park, which he won in.

You could be on to something.

Getting that rainbow warrior DuPont scheme back could possibly make things all good again.

Seemed like the alternate paint schemes were only at the Busch Clash and All-Star Race until like 2004-2005, then they started showing up everywhere. Like I said somewhere else, Rousch started that crap when Jamie McMurray in the #26 or Kurt Busch in the #97 had two primary sponsors for the season.

You got to have money on the car if possible. I noticed that at certain tracks, big companies that headquarter close by will sponsor a car for that race so they get a special paint color or paint job on the car.. Today's Daytona is sponsored by Subway, and Carl's car is also subway "avocado" . never heard of a subway avocado, but I bet somehow I will know before the race is over.

Avocados are popular right now, for whatever trendy 'foodie' reason. Subway (among other restaurants) is stuffing little green wedges into everything, and promoting the heck out of it this summer.

I live in an avocado state and I hate the mushy little green things.:bleh:

Yeah, like Charlie said, avocado has been everywhere the past few years. The avocado farming lobby is trying to get restaurants/people to call it "the super food". I was watching the Food Network (guilty pleasure) and one of their daytime chefs added it to something and called it the "super food" and said it improved the taste of everything. Paid product placement by the avocado people, maybe. Subway is one that bought heavy into the avocado thing. I really have no opinion on avocado by itself, but I do enjoy putting a good guacamole on burritos and sandwiches. So, I suppose I do like avocado.
