PARIS - Bulky sport utility vehicles might be banned from clogging up the streets of Paris after a top official in the capital’s left-wing government described them as a polluting “caricature of a car” unsuited to city life.

I've been to Paris several times --- how in the world would anyone notice if SUVs were banned? The auto traffic is so unbelievable.

People park absolutely anywhere --- in the middle of a moving lane of traffic, at the end of an esplanade blocking part of the street, on the sidewalk.

Who cares... Don't want to go to Paris anyways. They can kiss my Butt!!!!! and my exhaust pipe of my Escalade

I'm all for it!!!!! We need alternative fuel vehicles all over the planet and if SUVs were powered by alternative fuel sources, they would be OK.

i don't see what the big problem is with suv's and trucks. if the U.s. ever banns suv's and trucks, i'm moving to canada

Right now my SUV (Nissan Xtera) Is not doing much traveling until the gas prices come down :D I just fire the S-10 Pickup

It's too hard to take away whats already been given. It's the Governments fault for not thinking of this before letting the vehicles roll out, now they want to take my candy away....

It's fine to come up with alternative vehicles for the green peace at heart, but to put a ban on.....I don't think so, not here.

I am thinking of sellng my truck. I still like the truck, but at over $2.00 a gallon I am paying around a $100 a month in gas. That is rediculous.

But if someone thinks they can ban my truck, they have another thing coming. :dual9mm:

Before letting them roll out? Hmmmmm, last I heard this is a free market country. The government has no business controlling what "rolls out". If there were no market for it, then they would not "roll out"...........if there's a market for it then they will. As long as it's a legal product and is not morally unacceptable the government has no say so whatever. Though that thinking is eroding fairly quickly in this country........thanks mostly to the do gooders.

Alternative fuels will come about due to a necessity. Perhaps that necessity is here now.........if so, then technology will step up and produce a source and the market will dictate just how well it is accepted. Get government involved (other than maybe offering incentives, such as tax breaks) and it will take much longer and be much more expensive before it becomes a reality (if it ever becomes a reality). Environmentalists and the PC crowd that surrounds that group don't understand what this country is based on. Or maybe they do and they just don't care.

DE, I agree in principle, but the technology is already there!

If laws could be passed that as of 200? only alternative fuels or deisle (sp) as the only petroleum byproduct, but allow older vehicles to continue using gasoline, tighten up emission requirements, and more, it might cost more to buy the vehicle but far less to run it over the long haul.

Hell, many dragsters are alcohol fueled!

CA has about the toughest emission laws in the country, but is still a problem, isn't there!

Yes I'm an environmentalist, but I don't want anybody to ban my STUFF!

Yeah dragsters use alcohol..........I believe Indy cars do too. F1 uses it. But talk about expensive!! :( Plus I've been led to believe that though it's cleaner and burns at a much higher temperature (therefore developing more power), it goes away pretty fast once the throttle is opened!! If it were practical for every day use by the general public, you can bet your next couple years pay checks that it would be in use right now. We have a long way to go on using that fuel. You want to make it law that we need to switch to some alternative fuel such as alcohol when it isn't practical? A car using that fuel would cost a fortune and it would cost a fortune to operate............the technology isn't quite where some people think it is. Who knows what our future fuel may be.....gasoline is the only practical one at the moment. You can't make a law and expect it to solve the problem.........solve the problem and let the market place take to where it needs to be. Pretty ideas don't answer all the problems. Someday gasoline will be a thing of the past. I just hope we let it develop more naturally than making some law that would prohibit transportation in this country by an average person. Things need to be thought through more critically than just saying it can happen.......it can, but it can't be forced.

And CA having among the toughest emission laws in the country is a pretty good example of how making a law does not solve the problem. That MTBE additive they are using is a bigger problem than smog......it's getting in the ground water! It corrodes the tanks and they need to be replaced every few years. That adds to the price of gasoline. It pollutes more than the exhaust emissions. But it's a pretty law. A law environmentalists lobbied for........they got it and now I'm paying for it (everytime I get gas).

they make a diesel out of soy. they claim that it dosn't rob any horsepower or torque

Well, they DO need to put a ban over there. WAY TO MUCH TRAFFIC. Hope they don't put a ban here, that would suck ROYAL. :p

i actually thing that suv's are a good way to carpool. if 8 people had to carpool, they would need 2 ford focuses and only 1 ford excuarsion, and all the people in the excursion would be comfortable.

Good in theory, but how many people do you know that actually carpool?

Same goes for cities trying to institute light rail or commuter rail. In theory good, but harder to get people to use than they think. People have really become used to the freedom their car gives them. Most cities already have buses that people don't use. So 2 poeple riding a bus that gives off more emission than an individual car.

I myself could ride the bus or my bike to work but take my car because it is just easier. It is all force of habit.

 oh, I thought that this tread was about Paris Hilton getting in the back of an SUV and being..video taped again, never mind...
