'Pastrana mania' is about to begin. Travis Pastrana has signed with Michael Waltrip Racing and created a new Nationwide Series team that will feature Pastrana behind the wheel beginning in 2011 for a limited number of races. What do you think, success or epic failure?

Full story here.

Great background in everything except stock cars.Huge following ,especially with kids. A sponsor's dream. But like all of the newbies who haven't cut their teeth on oval racing, it will be a struggle. I hope he does well because it will bring my grandson into watching Nascar with me. Very similar to Danica ,actually, will bring new fans and new sponsors.

The guy has a ton of talent, whether he can focus it all on a Nationwide ride remains to be seen. I have seen him in a Rally car and a Monster Truck and he has done quite well. Hope he will adapt, I kind of equate this to a Ricky Carmichael type deal. Ricky has been showing some promise in Nationwide, so I think this might also work for Pastrana.

Pastrana is one of the most recognized and celebrated athletes in the world. He has won 16 X Games gold medals along with multiple supercross, motocross and rally championships in his career

LOL, I never heard of him

Meh. Another racer with ideologies that NASCAR is an easy break to popularity and riches. I give it three years

Danica will finally have somebody to race with. :D

(I have to admit I stole this from someone on Facebook. I thought it was funny.)

Travis will be nothing like Danica at all he wins in everything he tries. First motorcycles he wins with then he wins with rally cars he will be good.

When he doesn't win, you guys will come up with some lame excuse like he's in lousing equipment, or nobody wants him there. It'll be something like that. I've seen this through the years where "wonder boy" comes to the races and everyone expect him to win right off the bat.

Agreed, racing in stock car is a completely different ballgame than motorcross or monster truck. He won't be able to just jump behind the wheel of an 800hp machine and win every race. He'll have to get used to the different nuances that comes with driving a stock car. He may crash his first few times out on the track, and hopefully with time, effort and practice he may actually become a contender for a Nationwide championship.

Well he also happens to be a rally driver too I'd assume that be a bit more helpful then a monster truck.

Except this guy can actually drive and is used to a loose race car.
Hey folks, I'm not talking about the driver. I'm talking about the hype and the media obsession with someone new. Hell, I didn't even know what a "Travis Pastriana" was until someone in another forum told me.

Very true. I remember when NASCAR first decided to go to Indianapolis and the old USAC guys who have been driving on that track for years thought they could hop into a stocker and run wild over the regulars. Didn't happen and only a few were able to even make the field. And those guys were used to much more horse power. But power isn't everything in racing.

what strikes me with travis is that much of what he has done can be boiled down to, for lack of a better word *tricks*. he does astonishing things on fixed courses that require timing and guts. he will practice, and he's a quick learner, until his timing is perfect to achieve whatever goal he's after. no one doubts he has the guts to put his body on the line to achieve these goals. a nascar race isn't a fixed course. qualifying yes, he will probably excel at qualifying. during the race though you have other cars added to the mix and you can throw away the timing that you've learned when you're the only car on the track. during a race you will have cars under you, above you, ahead of you and all over the place in unpredictable spots. timing learned for an empty track won't do you much good during the race. the track, with other cars on it, changes every lap. i'm interested to see how well he performs *in traffic*.

Too much! I see no way that he'll live up to all the hype.....

Martin Truex Jr. car for Nationwide Series has the Travis Pastrana coming in 2011 paint scheme.

Pastrana,,,I thought this thread was about a sammich. I loves me some good pastrami on rye.:beerbang: With a cold one too. :beerbang::beerbang:

LOL, Awesome!!! Maybe that "Local" anesthesia was'nt all that local :p

I have no doubt that he will be able to compete well......however I do think that he is going to find it boring after a short time,...the money is the only thing to keep him in Nascar

He's got to give up being humpty dumpty sooner or later. It's funny how Red Bull gets out just as Pastrana comes in.
