If a mod wants to move this to the sports section that ok, but I find this to be more about life than sports. The Washington Nationals wanted to pay tribute to the 30 soldiers who were killed in the helicopter that went down recently in Afghanistan. I love the game of baseball and I watch virtually every Cleveland Indians game and sometimes other games as well. But, sometimes MLB's governing idiots does something that makes no sense at all. I fail to see how anyone could be harmed by allowing the team to wear these hats in tribute, and I can certainly see where baseball as a whole could get some great PR out of this. Maybe commisioner Bud Selig wanted to hold out to try and get the armed forces to pay MBL for the advertising? :owquitit:

MLB's Controversial Decision To Stop Nats From Wearing Military Tribute Hats

No sport in America is more patriotic than Major League Baseball, so it was odd that the powers that be got in the way of a tribute to our fallen military heroes.

The Washington Nationals, who play their home games just down the street from the Pentagon and the U.S. Capitol, wanted to wear special hats with military insignias during their game with the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. This was the Nats' first home game since 30 soldiers riding in a helicopter were killed in Afghanistan on August 6th. But Commissioner Bud Selig's top executives stopped it from happening.

Dan Steinberg of D.C. Sports Bog went to the team for an explanation. Here's what he got:

"As a team that is dedicated to supporting our military service men and women, we requested permission from Major League Baseball to wear hats representing all of the military branches during batting practice and throughout the game. We realize this was an extraordinary request and were pleased when permission was granted to use the hats during batting practice. The players were honored to wear the hats and in doing so were able to demonstrate the team’s solidarity with our military community."

Steinberg, one of the nation's top sports bloggers, then spoke with MLB spokesman Pat Courtney, who explained the decision.

"We reserve hats for national tributes, where every club is wearing them on the same day," Courtney said. "But we're happy to work with clubs on alternatives."

They should have just worn them and not said anything. And if MLB wanted to fine them or whatever, once the fans found out and started to raise their voice, it might have been dropped.

Easier to ask for forgiveness than get permission sometimes...

Seems a team once before, maybe the Padres, wore cammie uniforms for a game or two. Don't remember the rest fo the teams in MLB doing that.

Actually, I think the Padres wear those for every Sunday home game. Apparently those are ok though.

Sometimes the sheer stupidity of a organization be it in sports or politics simply amazes me.

I must be getting soft because I agree with fergy. I too say wear'em then watch the fan outcry when MLB tries to collect the fine.

Who's the biggest idiot: Bug Seilig, Roger Goodell, Brian Barnhart or Brian France?

Living in Milwaukee and seeing the antics of Bud Seiling for most of my life, he is by far the biggest moron ever. Heh Bud, without those folks in Afganistan and other dangerous places, you'd be too busy trying to save your butt from some nut case terrorist to worry about baseball hats.
