A few days or so back there was a question here about how much Winston Cup crew members are paid. The following was written by a former crew member a couple of week ago.
realize that seems to be for a crewmember that works the race weekend only. Many of the crews are full tiem employees of the teams and their pay would be different.
Each team is different, and even each member of each team negotiates his own pay, so this example is just general so you know what is involved. And, this is pay just for going over the wall. If the Pit Crew member works on the car at the shop the rest of the week, that pays on it’s own.
Usually, the team pays a salary for being on the pit crew, say $350.00, that is paid every race. Then there is a pit stop bonus plan that looks something like this:
0:13.0 - 0:13.5 seconds: $125.00
0:13.5 - 0:14.0 seconds: $100.00
0:14.0 - 0:14.5 seconds: $75.00
0:14.5 - 0:15.0 seconds: $50.00
0:15.0 - 0:15.5 seconds $25.00
0:15.5 and up: $0
If you made 8 pit stops and all of them where 0:13.8 seconds you would make another $800.00 per team member. That would be $1150.00 for the day. Now, we know a team does not often make 8 stops under 14 seconds. That would be phenomenal.
Some drivers give the pit crew another bonus based on time, in addition to this bonus from the team owner. But, the bonus from the driver is usually quite a bit less.
That is the general way most teams pay there pit crews. There are a few teams that give another bonus too, based on top five finishes. And, there are many little variations. There are a couple teams that just pay one flat salary with no bonus, but that salary is higher than $350.00.
Remember, these guys give up a lot of their free time they could have spent with family and friends, to travel on the weekend. They could be seriously injured on any given weekend. Many of the pit stop guys work 7 days a week for nearly the full year.
