Pennies for your thoughts

Did the Easter thing today at a local park. Let's cut to the chase. Our food is placed conveniently on tables under a ramada for easy serving. The family next to us did as well. One difference, though. They had strung a row of ziploc bags filled with water and pennies approx. 5 feet above their food. I had never seen this. I asked someone nearby why and learned that an old wives tale says it keeps flies and other insects away.

To the other family's credit, I did notice a minimal absence of flies, compared to ours. We are now considering doing this next year.

Should we even bother? Are there any rocket surgeons among us who can tell me why this would work? Or perhaps, and pardon the expression, any "old wives" who can vouch for this?

I've heard of the bags of water never heard of the pennies

The first time I saw the bags of water used was in Topsail, NC. I finally asked someone about it and was told the sun reflects off the water in the bags and confuses the fly, since flies have so many eyes....

Hmmm ..... makes sense. Thanks! I suppose the pennies were used to add to the reflection(?).

I use the bags of water here. I put them at my cat's litter box. Might have flies else where in the house but not there.

You can also remove the label and fill a 2 liter coke bottle up and it works.
