Penske Racing withdraws test-track plans
By Joe Marusak, The Charlotte Observer

Penske Racing has temporarily withdrawn its application for a test track off Mazeppa Road near Mooresville, company officials announced Tuesday.

Penske faced a hearing on its proposal before the Iredell County Board of Commissioners tonight. Commissioners have the final say on whether to approve the plans.

"We have elected to withdraw our application to the Iredell County Commission at this time," Roger Penske, chairman of Penske Performance Inc., said in a statement.

Withdrawing the conditional-use application gives the company time to "more fully communicate our plans to all our neighbors and to those others who have expressed an interest in this matter," Penske said in the e-mail.

"This action provides an opportunity for a better and more constructive dialogue, which can only benefit the county and its citizens," Penske said.

Concerned residents started a citizens' group, Web site and petition drive against a project they say will ruin their quality of life.

Partners Against Increased Noise (PAIN) intended to pack Tuesday night's hearing and cite concerns about noise and fumes from the proposed facility. The project's size and layout would be similar to the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series track in Richmond, Va., but would not be open to spectators.
