TALLADEGA, Ala. - Penske Racing's long-rumored move to the Dodge camp appears complete.
Dodge officials have scheduled a news conference for 9 a.m. Oct. 13 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., when they are expected to announce Penske's addition to the Dodge organization beginning with the 2003 season, ThatsRacin.com has learned.
The move has been speculated for much of the second half of the season, but Penske team members, including driver Rusty Wallace, have dismissed the talk in the past.
As recently as the August race at Indianapolis, when asked if he would be driving a Ford in 2003, Wallace replied: "Of course. That's the plan."
Penske and Dodge officials declined to comment on Friday.
"We are aware that Penske is considering an offer from Dodge," Ford spokesman Kevin Kennedy said, "but as of today they are still a part of the Ford team."
The move would put Wallace, the 1989 Winston champion, and rookie Ryan Newman in Dodge Intrepids next season. Wallace is sixth in points this season and Newman is seventh. Newman has one win while Wallace has yet to score a victory this season.
Penske Racing has been one of Ford's flagship teams since 1994, when they moved to the Ford camp from Pontiac. Wallace won his championship in Pontiacs.
The partnership between Penske Racing and Jasper Motorsports, which includes Jasper's No. 77 Ford team utilizing Penske-built engines, will continue at least for the 2003 season, sources said.
