Penske vs Roush-Yates

WARNING: This is a Mulhern story so take it for what it's worth ;)

Could Penske buy into Roush-Yates? While drivers and crews ponder the 'new' track and strategies, one of the hottest stories in the sport is being played out behind closed doors: The Roger Penske-Jack Roush dealing for 2013 is still being kept well hidden by both sides. Penske, after 10 years with Dodge, is switching to Fords at the end of the season, and what Penske will do for engines has been a big question in the NASCAR garage. Neither man has said much about how their talks have gone. Roush has said he's willing to sell engines to Penske. But then Penske has his own engine operation, 80-men strong. The sense has been that Penske and Roush will likely be more competitors in 2013 than tight Ford teammates. And following that, it would seem unlikely that Penske would be willing to or interested in buying engines from such a powerful competitor. Now, however there is increasing speculation in the stock car garage about the Penske-Roush situation, and it goes like this:
-- Penske would indeed buy his Ford engines in 2013 from Roush-Yates;
-- that would allow Penske to sell his own in-house/in-Charlotte stock car engine operation to Dodge, to allow Dodge to attract a top operation to run its cars next season;
-- the kicker could be that Penske might want to buy a major share of the entire Roush-Yates engine operation.

There a million business models to consider, without a full declaration who knows.

I do think both sides are smart enough not to scorch the earth. Vendetta are bad business anyway, Their already competitors and focusing on the beating the other 42 cars is obviously more important than an inter brand war.

If the logistics is too hard Penske may need Rousch engines, but I doubt that will happen. Penske only needs his 2 or 3 teams to supply entering speedweeks, he doesn't need to match Rousch volume.

I doubt the higher powers of NASCAR will allow Penske to wear two hats (Ford and Dodge). When Rousch purchased Card Littles John Deere team there was many complaints over Jack having a Pontiac.

If Penske needs some Rousch motors to startup next year, Ford obviously will be encouraging RFR to corporate.

I think that it's obvious Penske could get Roush engines (if he needed them ) just like Smoke gets Hendrick engines . It's also likely that Penske is far too competitive for that . He will want to build his own (better) engines.

And of course Penske could buy some Roush engines to test, reverse engineer and then improve on using his own engine building facilitys?

This is a complicated situation for Jack. He and Yates did the grunt work on the FR9 (remember all the blown engines back in 2010), and they are finally reaping the benefits. To have Penske swoop in as the future big dog would be tough for anyone to take. Penske seems to be very loyal to his engine employees, and I don't know if he'll cut them loose to a manufacturer with a sketchy committment to nascar.

I think the best solution for all would be Penske buying into Roush / Yates and augmenting their efforts in his own shop, along with a non-compete clause so Penske doesn't undercut Roush / Yates with engine sales and leases for a couple of years. Ford also wants an organization in their stable with the financial resources to match HMS, and a 78 years old billionaire who wants a championship would spare no expense to get it. Whatever happens with Roush, I think Ford will take care of Penske and provide him with any information they need to go it alone. At some point, the Roush / Yates secrets become part of Fords engine package anyway, so Jack and Yates would be smart to cash in now and work with the new big dog in the Ford camp.

Although I think that combining their efforts has its advantages, part of me would like to see them in competition with one another for top Ford.

As for Penke being the big Dog in the Ford camp, Hornish, Allmendinger and Keselowski are going to step it up a few notches before that happens.

Exactly. FUTURE big dog. You can bet your ass that Jack is wondering what Ford gave Penske to make the move, and would like to get some of it for himself. It doesn't take much for Jack to feel slighted, and he sure doesn't like the prospect of sharing the limelight with Roger. Remember when the talk of HMS' 200th CUP win started? Jack rolled out his own lame assed 200th win IN ALL SERIES parade.

When you consider the media attention HMS and their drivers recieve for nearly every step they take, you can't blame a guy for doing what he has to in a fan/sponsor driven sport.

As for technology, Roush is a Ford engineer so I suspect he'll do just fine ;)

30 years ago. Penske to Ford is very good for Jack, but I doubt Jack will realize that. I'll be real surprised if he doesn't do some kicking and screaming before this is settled. Here's what I imagine Jacks list of demands to include.

1) All Ford enineering passes through Roush.
2) All Penske engineering requests to Ford pass through Roush.
3) Penske does not open or improve Roush engines without Roush 'help'.
4) Penske will never supply engines to other teams.

Basically, Roush will want to know EVERYTHING Penske does, but he'll decide what he can hold back from Penske. Jack won't get what he wants, so he'll demand money from Penske. If push comes to shove, Jack will lose. JMO.

Perhaps but I don't believe Jack Roush to be the loathsome, evil barbarian that he somtimes is portrayed as. I do think he's a smart, shrewd business man who knows full well that you do what you can to protect your own interests and let other look out for themselves.

Exactly what I'm saying. Penske doesn't share well either, so this could get interesting. Jack and Yates certainly deserve to be compensated well for all their R&D work on the FR9. But if ego's come into play, Roush and Penske could become much more competitor than cooperator.
