Verona Infant Suffered Severe Trauma

VERONA, Wis. -- A 2-month-old Verona boy suffered severe trauma before he was rushed to University of Wisconsin Hospital and pronounced dead on Wednesday, according to state documents.

Verona police went to a home in the 300 block of South Franklin Street at about 1:08 a.m. after a report of a child not breathing. The boy was taken by ambulance to the University of Wisconsin Hospital, where he later died.

Police said they're still investigating the incident, but according to a report from the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families, every bone in the infant's skull was fractured and his abdomen had massive bruising. The report said the injuries were so serious that surgery wasn't possible. The child was placed on life support, and wasn't expected to live.

The mother of the infant reportedly tripped and fell on the baby, but the DFC report said the mother's story isn't consistent with the extent of the baby's injuries.

Police officials declined to comment on the report -- only saying they're waiting for additional test results before moving forward with their investigation. Lt. Dave Dresser said it's possible the tests will come back indicating the child suffered severe trauma.
