LAS VEGAS, Nev. - While Jeff Gordon may not be the favorite to win Sunday's UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, odds are he'll have a strong run.

Gordon, a four-time NASCAR Series champion and driver of the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet, has captured 64 victories in 367 career starts, or 17.4 percent. Also on his resume are 175 top-fives (47.7 percent), 232 top-10's (63.2 percent) and 15,703 laps led.

In six career starts at Las Vegas, Gordon has one win (2001), two top-fives, two top-10's and has led 87 laps.
"We've had some good runs here, but we've struggled some, also," Gordon said. "Last year, we led some laps with a good car, but I was caught up in an accident.

"We're using the same car this year. It's also the car that took us to Victory Lane in 2001."

The car may be the same, but the tires provided by Goodyear will be significantly different. At the request of NASCAR, Goodyear has introduced a new, "softer" tire to be used at many tracks this season.

"The new tires will benefit the teams with good communication." Gordon said. "I believe we're one of those teams.

"The grooves are beginning to open up here, so we should be able to run low or up a couple of grooves once the tires begin to fall off. The key will be communicating exactly what the car is doing to your crew."

Gordon enters the 400-mile event fifth in the point standings, 54 behind points leader Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Gordon is one of only three drivers to lead laps in each of the first two races. He is also one of only three drivers to finish in the top 10 in each of the first two races of the 2004 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup season.

In fact, Gordon has finished in the top 10 in 10 of the last 11 races dating back to September of 2003. In that span, he also has two victories, seven top-fives and has led 480 laps.

"We were consistent toward the end of last season and it has carried over to this year," said Gordon. "We ran well at Daytona and we had a good car at Rockingham before cautions caught us a lap down.

"Hopefully, we'll have another strong showing this weekend."

Odds are, he will.

And I for one, am hoping for a top five! :bounce:

sorry majestyx i just don't like him, and to be honest i think it came last year when he on several occasions ask his spotter to ask someone to let him pass them. somethin about that just flipped the switch for me.
 
Well, I'm most certain that he isn't the first one to do it, and certainly won't be the last. His conversation with his spotter is just the one that was broadcast over the tv airways. If memory serves me correctly, Crusty has done it more than just a couple of times! But, if that's the ONLY reason you dislike him, then........................... :blink: :wacko:
 
I'm betting that Larry Foyt will put some 'sauter' moves on the field! :p
 
I would love to see Jeff back in victory lane this weekend. That is the car he won with in Vegas in 2001 and he really dominated that race at times.
 
Jeff got wrecked last year, got into an accident with I think Kurt Busch and a couple of others, he looked like he had an above average car until then. Gotta admit, some Gordon fans left the race real early.

Oh yes, and any Chevy but a Hendrick Motorsports one would do fine by me.
 
i don't like rusty either ! and i've thought of some other reasons for not being a big fan of Johnson but we are not going to get into a pi**ing contest here i like YOU :wub: plus we ain't posta bash on this site :rolleyes:
 
Hey, now don't be pickin on Rusty. He sent Jaws' Tide ride into the spin cycle one year in The Winston. From that moment on, Rusty's been OK in my book. :lol:
