BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Kyle Petty was taken to a local hospital after smacking the wall late in the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. But Petty was awake and alert in the infield care center, and the trip to Bristol Regional Medical Center appeared to be precautionary.

Petty was banged up after getting involved in an accident with Ward Burton and Robby Gordon. Gordon and Burton touched coming off turn 4, and Burton spiun toward the frontstretch wall.

Burton then slid up the track and clipped Petty's speeding car. Petty did an abrupt spin and hit drivers' side against the outside wall.

Petty, one of the few drivers to use PPI Motorsports' cocoon-like carbon-fiber seat, took a few extra moments to get out of his car.

"He took a hard lick," said Petty's crew chief, Steven Lane. "I think that when he came to, he said he could get out on his own. He'll be ok."

Petty, with help from emergency personnel, walked gingerly to an awaiting stretcher, and he was taken via ambulance to the infield care center. Under another late caution, Petty got in another ambulance to exit the track through the Turn 3 crossover gate.

"He just said he hurt all over," Lane said.

Kyle Petty has been transferred to a local Bristol hospital for further observation, Petty was awake and alert otherwise. This ends Petty's 40 race streak of not having a DNF.

What a shame, he had a legitimate shot at a top-10 finish, too. I hope he'll be okay.

That was really a shame. Robby Gordon is a menace.

::rolls eyes::

both drivers got loose coming off of the turn... it was a racing incident

Hey sorry to correct all of you but I actually saw the race and the accident. Ward Burton spun down the strait and across turn 1 and broadsided Kyle from nowhere. Robby was no where to be found. Yea he is a 'menace' and had some things to do with other crashes but not this one. He was innocent.

:bslfag:

From my eyes Ward got spun out and accidentally went up track into Kyle Petty. It was Robby Gordon's fault.

wrong.

dead wrong.

robby was on the outside, both of them got loose coming out of turn 4 at the same time, ward chased the car up while robby chased the car down and both touched... ward could not hang on and he spun.

racing incident!

simple as that...

and to those who say it was robby gordon's fault, well its a shame because it always seems as robby is a scapegoat for simple racing incidents... the only wreck that was truly his fault was when he spun kyle in the opening laps...

the true menace in today's race were both ryan newman and brett bodine

and to those who say this wreck was robby's fault... well :dual9mm:

I must admit to being very quick to believe things are Robby Gordon's fault. He is a menace whether or not he had anything to do with this incident. As I have stated before, he is a very good open-wheel driver, but he sucks as a NASCAR driver. And him being a whiny-@ss punk doesn't help me like him any better. But then, what do I know?

What Happened cause I was at work and went to the bath room after he spunt and then they said he was being helped out of his car and put on a strecher??

Ok, folks, lets all take a deep breath. The important thing is that Kyle does not seem to be severely injured. I'm sure the big red truck will sort it out.

He did have a top 10 car without a doubt!! After all 3 of his spins he was in the top 15 before the wreck!! He had a kick butt car!! He came just inches away from making it past Ward!!
The important thing is that he is ok, might be sore but he is ok!!

Kyle Petty returned home Sunday night following the Food City 500 NASCAR Winston Cup race. He is expected to be ready for this week’s events at Texas Motor Speedway. Petty was examined at Bristol (Tenn.) Regional following a crash Sunday, and was released. He will obviously follow up with a routine examination from his personal physician this week. "He’s very sore," said Steven Lane, crew chief for Petty’s #45 Georgia-Pacific Dodge. "He hit pretty hard, so you would expect that. But he should be ready to go at Texas this week."(Williams Company)(3-24-2003)
