BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Kyle Petty was taken to a local hospital after smacking the wall late in the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. But Petty was awake and alert in the infield care center, and the trip to Bristol Regional Medical Center appeared to be precautionary.
Petty was banged up after getting involved in an accident with Ward Burton and Robby Gordon. Gordon and Burton touched coming off turn 4, and Burton spiun toward the frontstretch wall.
Burton then slid up the track and clipped Petty's speeding car. Petty did an abrupt spin and hit drivers' side against the outside wall.
Petty, one of the few drivers to use PPI Motorsports' cocoon-like carbon-fiber seat, took a few extra moments to get out of his car.
"He took a hard lick," said Petty's crew chief, Steven Lane. "I think that when he came to, he said he could get out on his own. He'll be ok."
Petty, with help from emergency personnel, walked gingerly to an awaiting stretcher, and he was taken via ambulance to the infield care center. Under another late caution, Petty got in another ambulance to exit the track through the Turn 3 crossover gate.
"He just said he hurt all over," Lane said.
