PHOENIX -- A corporate jet reportedly owned by NASCAR's Petty Enterprises and carrying the racing crew of driver Christian Fittipaldi made an emergency landing at Sky Harbor International Airport Wednesday night.
Shortly after departure, pieces of shredded tire was found on the runway and the pilot was instructed to return. However, before he could land, the pilot had to circle the airport in order to burn fuel.
With Phoenix fire standing by, the plane landed safely around 6 p.m. None of the nine passengers were injured.
The jet reportedly belongs to Petty Enterprises and was carrying the racing team of CART driver Christian Fittipaldi, the newphew of Formula One racing legend, Emmerson Fittipaldi. Initial reports indicated that Christian Fittipaldi was on board the plane along with his crew.
Christian, who left on a commercial flight earlier in the day, has been in town testing at Phoenix International Raceway to prepare for his NASCAR debut at next week's Checker Auto Parts 500 race.
Earlier on Wednesday, Litchfield Park Mayor Woody Thomas was injured in a charity race at PIR.
