Petty to broadcast while driving

TNT is expected make an announcement regarding its 2007 NASCAR coverage Wednesday.

Petty will be an analyst on its six Cup races this summer, and call one — the June 24 Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma, Calif. — as he races in it.

"There's constant communication between drivers and their spotters and crew chiefs anyway," says Petty, 47. "Really, just pushing another button and talking to millions of people won't be a ton different. Maybe I'll have to clean up my language."

TNT's coverage of six Nextel Cup Series races begins June 10 with racing from Pocono followed by races at Michigan, Sonoma, New Hampshire, Daytona and Chicago.

I am totally against any driver talking with the networks except during red flags! Thay have lots more to think about than talking on TV.. To be honest even during yellows or reds I have never heard any earth shaking remarks anyway.
He is barely a passable driver WITHOUT talking on the TV!!!
Betsy:rolleyes:

I see only 1 problem with it:

It's a road course. 2 or 3 spotters and a crew cheif to talk to. hopefully i'd like to think they're on 2 different channels so he can hear his spotter and still talk to TNT at the same time.

I think it will be pretty cool. Of course, I really like Kyle Petty. I look forward to hearing his take on what is happening out on the track whether he is driving in that race or not. :beerbang:

I hope if he gets mad at someone he don't hit the wrong button and say it on TV.

Me too, Betsy. Never made sense to me.

He has a hard enough time driving in a striaght line anyway

I disagree. When Neil Bonnett worked for CBS and decided to make a bit of a comeback in the '93 Talladega race, he did some broadcasting while racing. He did a good job and gave an interesting perspective.

Ok so you are willing to watch miles and miles of HIS car, prolly in 33rd place, going round and round while the exciting up front race is going on? Just what is this "nearly ran" going to say that would make the race more exciting to the fans? ....I repeat, BAD IDEA!
Betsy:rolleyes:

Some people can multi task and some cannot. We'll just have to wait and see how Kyle does. I think he'll do a great job. I'm interested in knowing how ALL cars are running and not just the top 3 to 5. I don't mean in just reading the top of the screen. I want to see the actual car on the track.

Neil Bonnett could make anything work. :)

There's no reason for a driver to talk as part of the broadcast. What's he gonna say? "The xx Chevy/Fusion/Dodge runs great". "The XX crew did a great job." "I want to thank XX for sticking with us." "Goodyear gave us a great tire." "Some drivers drive like this is the last lap." etc, etc, etc. They can probably record this before the race and then just run the tape.

And Neil Bonnet? I really liked him. And he was a great talker. But did not add anything of value during the race. Drivers need to communicate problems/concerns etc to their crew chief. Not try and be entertaining.

Don't really think it is a good idea myself. I think Kyle might make a good race analyist but do it while the car is under red or yellow.

It may all depend on where he starts. If he starts mid-pack then he can report all the cars as they go past him. But, if he starts near the rear what's he going to say?

A sample of the broadcast could well sound like:
I can still see the sun reflecting off of Shelmerdine's rear window but it's getting smaller. Wait, what was that...Oh, it was just Jimmie going around me,...again...and Jeff...and Tony...and Kurt...and...and...and...well darn there's Shelmerdine going around me too.
That does sound real exciting.

Thanks, I thrive on sarcastic humor. And, trolling (as I call attention to my new Avatar...The Great and All Knowing Krista Voda. The bestest sports reporter evar...) is fun to. :)
