How far would Kyle Petty go to insure the restoration of Petty Enterprises to the glory years of Richard Petty's seven Winston Cup (now NEXTEL Cup) Championships? Would he surrender the No. 45 Dodge to another driver and hang up his helmet? "Yes, I would retire tomorrow if it would help Bobby Labonte win races and Petty Enterprises contend for the championship," Petty confirmed candidly when asked if he was willing to step out of his ride under the right circumstances. What would be the right circumstances? Petty said he would gladly step aside as a NEXTEL Cup Series driver if the team was able to sign a marquee driver and sponsor capable of furthering the efforts of Bobby Labonte, Todd Parrott, Robbie Loomis and the rest of the team in Randleman, NC. "And," he added, "If I retired from this I would go racing in the Grand Am Series or something like that. But, once I retired from NEXTEL Cup that would be it. If I said, 'I'm done completely then I would be done completely. If I said I would run three or four races then I would only run three or four races.'"(CircleTrackPlus.com)(7-22-2006)

As much as i like Kyle, it is time he stepped down, he should have done this a long time ago IMO.

yup, he should retire.. but not if he can't get a quality driver to take his place.. but i think VJ is taking up a lot of his time and efforts, even though its up and running..

Now that petty enterprises has got some key people in place and the 43 is running pretty decent, maybe they can entice a talented young driver into the 45 ride.

I'm torn here. Kyle is almost as famous as his father, and granted, it's mostly because of his name. However, there are people here on this board that no doubt don't remember when Kyle finished second in points to the championship. I do believe that Kyle has lost his edge in his driving, and while maybe not in his desire, his driving is definately not up to par with the majority of teams in NASCAR The one thing that is good in his staying is his recognition with his project, somethig that is so grand in scale that it's almost impossible to criticize him in his goal to continue racing.

Not too many drivers have been able to achieve such status that Kyle has with the record he's gained. His surname, the fact that his child was killed in a racing incident has allowed this man to take a highway that few have been allowed, but he's also been so successful with. Kyle Petty is in my mind, not just a racer of quality, but one that has gone far and byond being quality. I really don't know how I can give him the credit that he so deserves, but I admire him daily. Few men can claim they've given their lives to the dedications to their sons as Kyle has done, and fewer have been able to continue in their business.

Well said Buck, i know it would be nice to carry on, maybe get another win in the 45, but sometimes you have to know when the time has come to hang it up.

i really hoped that when all the changes took place at PE over the offseason that both teams would be running good again...well one team is and the othe one isnt....i dont want to see PE fail and i think Kyle's best place right now is maybe not in the race car.

If Kyle got a win in the 45 car i cant imagine there would be a try eye in the stands....i really think it would go down as one of the biggest wins in the sport.......i just hope that at some point the 45 car can start running like the 43.

I also agree with what you said, Buck, except for this last statement: 'Few men can claim they've given their lives to the dedications to their sons as Kyle has done, and fewer have been able to continue in their business.'

Why would you say that? How do you know? Because it's not in public? Not On TV?

I'm a FAN, but I believe that when Adam died, the true love and passion for the sport was shattered. JMO
