Phoenix 1988

The first Winston Cup race at the mile track was held on November 6 of that year. The circuit has visited the track every year since then.

This race was notable for a couple of reasons.

Phoenix International Raceway became the first new track for NASCAR fans since Pocono was added in 1979 with the running of the Checker 500k. It was only fitting that a first time winner steer his way into Victory Lane.

Alan Kulwicki fended off the advances of Winston Cup car owners for two and ½ years after assuming the ownership of his Ford team and many questioned the decision. It was with pride that Kulwicki turned his car around on the track and performed a self-named "Polish Victory Lap" so he could see the fans up close and allow them to see him better.

God I miss Kulwicki.  :(

Indeed.

One wonders if anyone will again be able to accomplish what Alan did as an owner/driver of a single car team.

I don't dismiss the possibility entirely. There were multitudes of NASCAR analysts who insisted that Alan would not. I would love to see it happen again.
