Yet another track to be repaved.....

I sure hope they do a better job than the rest of our roads in Pennsylvania! They will probably be driving around hundreds of barrels next spring race. :D If PennDOT is responsible for this paving project then expect the Long Pond Straight to be down to one lane with a stop/go flagman at each end.

Pocono Raceway to be repaved during offseason

Add Pocono Raceway to the list of NASCAR tracks being repaved.

Work began Saturday on the 2.5-mile track, which was last repaved in 1995.

“From the base up will be an all brand new track,” Pocono Raceway President Brandon Igdalsky said. “It’s a complete resurfacing. … It’s been 16 years since we’ve had that asphalt down there. We have some serious weather around here in the winter time, and we’re happy we got that long out of it.

“We run driving schools and car clubs that use the road courses and also use the tri-oval. That’s a lot of added use on the track and she’s served her purpose, and it’s time to put a new layer on there.”

There will be no configuration changes to the unique, triangular track. The outer pit wall will be new and the pit stalls will be concrete.

“We thought about [a configuration change], but the more we looked at it and the more we spoke to people, it was better to leave as-is for now,” Igdalsky said.

Igdalsky met with NASCAR officials Friday to make sure the sanctioning body was OK with the plans.

After two months of work before it gets too cold, the project will resume in the spring. Igdalsky said the plan is to have Goodyear on the track in April for a tire test prior to the June race, the first Pocono race at the shorter 400-mile distance.

“If you look back to ’95 when we repaved and you look at the races the following couple of years, they were some unbelievable races,” Igdalsky said. “Speeds were up and passing was up. … With going to a 400-mile race and with everybody on a level playing field because nobody is going to have any information on the track, I think it’s going to make for one heck of a season of racing.”

Daytona was repaved prior to this season while Phoenix has been repaved and reconfigured during this season. Michigan is being repaved before next season and Kansas will go through a repave between its two races in 2012. Watkins Glen officials also are talking about repaving that track in the next few years.

From here.

Yes, by all means, close down one of the most unique tracks on the circuit. And if were lucky, they can move the dates to some other cookie cutter tracks.

No not a "Cookie Cutter" EVERYONE wants more road course's

Wait a minute isn't Pocono basicly a ROAD COURSE? It's sure isn't a oval! No right turns though

Used to be referred to as a "ROVAL" but I haven't heard that term used since NASCAR instituted the gear rule...

Sure, repave the track, but neglect the infield facilities. The mens and womens facilities in the infield camping area need some TLC, to put ot nicely. But, we always have a great time when we go there!!!!!!

Yeah but where else can you spend time in the john with a rabbit or deer?

Now, all they need is an IndyCar race :beerbang:

My thoughts exactly, this repave job is about 22 years too late. They should've done it following the 89 racing season that way CART would've kept racing there & there would've still been a 500 mile triple crown at least until 1995. But hey, with them repaving the track & more cars showing up for IZOD races now, they can go ahead & put the Michigan 500 back on the schedule along with a Pocono 500. They ain't gonna do it though, believe that...

I bet 99 out of 100 would rather see a NW race at IOWA than a CUP race at POCONO.

...and the furry companion? :D

I can't believe you aren't getting this.

I'm not sure where the misunderstanding is? Everytime we go to Pocono especialy the first race there's critter's all over the place parking lots, infeild, garage area, and yes in the "facilitys" called a john by some folks.
MajicMiller was commenting on the state of the "facility's" and I was mentioning something interesting about them.
I don't hunt only fish but I would guess the Pocono's would be a hunter's dream.

This is your last hint. Here in NY, some johns spend time in the john with a hired dear.

OOOOOHHHH! Down here in the South Men prefer Women.

Speaking of women I've had the same wonderful girlfreind for a long long time and would'nt ever think of replaceing her!

I wouldn't mind seeing a race there either but not at the expense of both Pocono races.

Not both. Just take one away. Both Pocono races are in the summer and are very close to each other. It just don't make sense. Kinda like the Michigan races. I could do with just one of those as well. Let's go to some other tracks. Perhaps Rockingham again?

Is it my ability to sleep that makes this track unique?

I agree that the need to shift and decelerate to such a slow speed that requires shifting is cool, I don't see lots of good places to pass however.

It's kinda like Indy, with three turns. And they all differ, so your call will drive like **** somewhere right?>:idunno:

What I do know is, watching the NW race at IOWA is off the hook. As is the racing at IRWINDALE CA. Or Atlanta for that matter.
