I have recently heard several of the announcers mention a "podium" finish. I do not remember this in years past. Are we now comparing grass roots racing from the US to racing from across the pond?
Via hornish, Juan Pab, and the road ringers, I do believe so.
Yes that's great, let's take yet another thing from Europe and intigrate it into something that is American. I mean has the constant shoving of Communist Kickball into American society not been enough?

Well, their banquet never gets seen, as far as I know, so maybe they decided to give the top 5 some recognition at the end of the season? Sorry you lost me with the "Communist Kickball." Oh, would that be soccer?
If so, soccer is a great sport and I remember watching our HS team before I was even IN HS. It gives the girls something else they can compete in when they're young and have no choice but being a cheerleader. (OK, I was a cheerleader... LOL)

What on Earth does this have to do with the discussion at hand?

I'm not sure where you've heard this, but the only time I'm heard "podium" mentioned is during the Nationwide races. In this case they're not talking about a "podium" as in the top-3 finishers in open-wheel racing, but rather who gets to be on stage at the awards banquet. In Nationwide it's only the top 5 finishers in points that get this honor.
If there's a physical "podium" at the banquet, then this would make sense. However, the announcers will frequently alternate this term with "stage" so I guess it's not a big deal. This is also probably the fault of commentators who have covered other forms of racing, and bring that lingo to NASCAR. An example of this is calling the chicane at Watkin's Glen a "bus stop".
Don't worry: NASCAR isn't going to start adding a podium to victory lane.
