This huge points change comes after matt beats everyone with consistancy most notably ryan newman with 8 wins and 11 poles, while matt only had 1 win. Ryan did have alot more top 5s then matt with a total of 17 while matt only had 11. Matt did have more top 10s with 25 while neman had a total of 22, also newman had quite a few dnfs too.

All this huff and puff over this old points sytem because of this, yet where was this mass complaining at in 1996???

Jeff gordon had 10 wins compared to terrys 2, they both had the same amount of top 5s and top 10s. but terry won. I guess it depends on whos loosing and whos winning.

This might get some people mad but seriously if dale jr was the 2003 cup champion would this points change still have happened when it did???

You summed it up pretty clearly Smack . The wrong guy wins, disable the system to make sure it doesnt happen again, I guess. Look back at '85 and THEN might have been the time to change it.....But nah...wait till this season and THEN change. The whole thing is a cheap facade. A PR sham.

I think the main reason for the change in points system after Matt won was because of the dominant fashion in which His team did so,at one point in 2003 Matt was over +400 points ahead of 2nd place in the standings.

In 1996 Jeff Gordon only lost out by -34 points to Terry Labonte, therefore a very close points race, despite the lop-sided win totals of the 2 drivers, if 5 more points had been awarded to the race winner in 1995 then Jeff Gordon would have been the Cup winner,as it should be,winning a race should account for more than 5 more points IMHO. ;)

I also agree that if Dale Earnhardt Jr. had won the Cup in 2003,that the points system would have been left in place,as NASCAR does seem to play faves IMHO.That should be corrected also, would make for a more level playing field, which is what NASCAR's supposed to be all about anyway ;)
