I think you are going to have to get used it, Lappy...........I'm afraid it's here to stay. A few tweaks here and there but it's a good system. Heck of a lot more exciting and thrilling than the old one..........ten races to go and no one can predict who's going to win of the ten in the Chase! Ten to go any other season and it was who was going to get 4th or 5th (or on a really exciting year, who was going to get 3rd or 4th)............the top two were pretty much locked up and usually the top position was pretty much known. Now that just ain't what I consider exciting at all.

It is nice to see Mark Martin have a chance for his first official championship. I don't know if he can pull it off, but it would be nice to see.

Other questions to ponder...

Can Jeff win a 5th championship, therefore causing me to change my forum name? Man I hope so. ;)

Can Jimmie Johnson win his first?

Will Ryan Newman get on one of his hot streaks and make kind of a sham out of this idea by having several hundred less points earned throughout the year and still winning the championship?

Will Tony Stewart have his hopes dashed by a few people with nothing left to lose now who have revenge on their minds for his earlier acts of aggression?

Will Kurt Busch get on one of his hot streaks at the right time?

These questions and more will be answered over the next 10 weeks or so. It should be interesting, I'll tell you that. :salute:

I'm just wondering who'se not going to bother to enter the final 10 races due to $$$$ or sponsorship worries? HMMMMMM

Anticipating problems already? Sounds like my buddy, DW! :D

Like it or hate it.... it is here folks. Let's give it an honest go, then after Homestead, we can duke it out on what worked and what didn't.

It will be interesting to see how TV covers the cars that are not in the playoff run.

I wasn't crazy about it at first, but I am pretty curious to see how this one will play out. Unfortunately it looks like my boy Jeff would have won the title if we were still using the old system. But, now he will just have to win a new way. ;)

I still think it is an unfair system to the guys in the 11-15th spot. They dont have a chance at getting into the top 10 and going to NY. But is will be interesting to see how the top 10 do end up. That is what it is all about anyway.

Actually, it would have been one of the closer races for the championship under the old system between Gordon, Johnson, and Earnhardt. All of them were in the running.

I absolutely agree. But, I like Jeff's chances going against two guys who have never won a championship at this level before.

I still like Jeff's chances mostly because he usually does very well at the next 10 tracks. But with this new format luck will play a much larger part in determining the championship. Jeff's luck hasn't been the greatest the past few years. <_<

I can't say if I like it or not. A playoff type system with teams on the track that are out of it seems a little strange.
I would have to say luck will have more to do with it than anything.
The one who stays out of other peoples wrecks and has no mechanical failures will most likley win it.
Just my two cents.

i still say you become a champ in racing by how well you did all year and noy just over a 10 race deal.

i have not cared for nascar as much since dale died, and now its a lot less.

the only time i have cared about a race this year was when Robby won the bush race.

They won't.

Then what's the point in watching if all you're gonna get is glimpses of the ten chase cars. I already don't have much point in watching now that Harvick isn't racing for anything other than his sponsors. There's no way he'll crack the top ten so the best he can get is 11th. The way it's set up is great for the Chase cars but everyone else is stuck. They said they wanted a playoff system but it makes it pointless for those out of contention to even be out there other than for the sponsorship.

I had hoped for Harvick to make it but he didn't. This goes for all that didn't make it like Labonte and Jarrett. Seems rather pointless.

well, you can look at it this way, I'm a robby gordon fan, and I can watch to see how well robby can improve on the start of his season. At the same time, I never expected him to crack the top ten after his abysmal season start, but at the same time, If harvick wasn't in the top ten by this point in the season under the old system, there's no way (barring strange happening of chance and random bad luck) he wasn't going to make it into the title hunt anyway...neither were say, positions 6-10, so this not only gives them a chance at the title, but makes the final ten races more interesting championship wise. Also, if you don't make it into the chase, then it says something about the first 26 races...do better...heck, even if you weren't in the top ten, you could get in if you were less than 400 points behind anyway...and with all the crap luck and blown engines fromt he top two in recent events, if you weren't closer than 400, you didn't really NEED to be in the chase. Harvick took it pretty well...Jarrett was a little out of control, but at the same time, they now have the chance in the final ten races to actually DO SOMETHING on the track and prove that, "hey, i may not have made it this year, but next year, look out" that, or, they can roll over and let the top ten keep on proving why they are the top ten............................

Hey..........I have to agree!! :D

One more suggestion for everyone who is crying about their driver not being in the Chase: There are close to 50 regular drivers in the series every year. Surely you could find a couple to root for along with your favorite........might save some of the hurt feelings posts I read here every week!!

Well, I will be pulling for Jeff to win his 5th title. But
I will hope either Elliott, Mark, or Jeremy really could do it.
Just don't like the prospect of having the 11thru??? being the
"also rans". I do agree, I wouldn't wanna be a sponsor and not have my product be shown on telly for all the bucks I was paying. And if
a buncha sponsors leave, well....................................
thank you very much NASCAR!!!!!

I don't think sponsors will leave. But I do think some of the money will dry up (and that's not necessarily a bad thing). I see bonus' for teams getting into the "Chase" in the future!! Y'all always pick the negative..........never the positive.

I still think its funny most nascar officials said over and over the point of this was so that drivers would concentrate more on winning then consistancy. But its still set up that way, probally more then ever before. I am going to die laughing if the general same thing happens again. A likely Example: Everyone has major problems in one race or another exept for matt kenseth or elliot sadler and one of them wins the cup without getting a win in these races, while Jr,jimmie, or jeff end up winning like 3-5 races and end up 8-10 in points pos.

That could very well happen Smack. A DNF could be extremely costly with only 9 races to make up for it. :(

I don't remember anyone saying that the new points system would put more emphasis on winning, unless you are talking about the 5 additional points awarded the winner of each race........my understanding of that was to eliminate the possibility of the second place driver winning the same number of points as the winner. I think the whole point was to put a damper on the "points racing" that usually occurs about this time each season. Consistency is still a premium in NASCAR...........and I don't think anyone (officials) wanted to change that. But, with 10 races remaining and 45 points separating 1st to 10th a "points racer" is in big trouble!! Consistency will rule..........just as it did before.

I still think that the playoff system stinks. It will not happen but nothing I would like to see more than for either McMurray, Kahne, or Labonte win all of the remaining 10 races.

It's not a matter of crying or whining on anyone's part. My guy didn't make the cut. I harbor no ill feeling about it. He was in the hunt and now he isn't. I feel the same way about football though. If my team doesn't make the playoffs then it's time to retire the jersey until next year. I'm a die-hard. I don't cheer for any other team. And don't start by saying that Harvick is on a team. Get real. Everybody knows the RCR drivers don't get along. Harvick and Robby bump each other all the time and they're supposed to be on the same team. They even take each other out of contention for the win.
Who should I cheer for?
Gordon? He's got enough championships.
Jimmie Johnson? I wouldn't spit on him if he was on fire.
Jr.? Nascar already gives him enough free passes.
Kenseth? As a Harvick fan... no way.
Busch? Rubberhead.
Stewart? I don't like anything about him.
That leaves Sadler, Newman, Mayfield and Martin. Why would I waste 3 hours to watch a race to cheer for one of four guys that I'm totally indifferent towards?

The Chase has done what it said. More publicity and keeping more fans towards the end of the season. Now instead of 2 or 3 drivers actually in it until the end, ten have a chance. That's great if your guy is in the hunt. If not, your guy is racing for a chance to sit with the top ten at the banquet. Whoopee.

And before the bashing begins, I wasn't trying to stir the pot on any particular driver. That is how I feel. I don't have to agree with you and you do not have to agree with me.

Not so, if your guy happens to be McMurray who is currently in 11th place and even if he wins all 10 remaining races he will not be in the top 10 and at the banquet in N.Y.

My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that 11th place will be at the banquet in New York.

You could be right. :D Darned if I know. OK, lets say that Kahne wins all 10 remaining races and will not be at the banquet. :)

You are correct, TonyB. The 11th place finisher will be in New York this year, but I'm not completely sure if it will be at the top 10's table. They will also get a $1 million bonus for that 11th place finish also. ;)

11th pace finish doesn't sound too bad, nice consolation prize and something for the other 30+ teams to race for.

I'll say Jeff Gordon wins 5th Championship, but if He can't pull it off, then I would like to see the long suffering Mark Martin finally win His 1st Championship. :D
