Points Lead

:leap: Jef has had some good runs and moved up to #2 in points.Do you think he can take the points lead if so when.

I think he can. But I don't think we can forget Mr. Martin just yet. Of course, SOMEBODY needs to tell Sterling that he ain't supposed to be leading the points after 25 races, because he damn sure ain't acting like he knows it.

And neither is the rest of the top 6 or 7. Whoever can run the best and finish consistenly up front will most likely take it. Jeff has got a great shot, expically with all this momentum!

I believed all year that sterling was gonna win it all this year. He has had his share of bad luck. and so has just about everyone else in the top 7. I believe Awsome bill still has a decent shot at winning it all.
But Gordon does have the most momentum and Nascar is all about momentum, if he keeps finishing like he has the last few weeks, and sterling stumbles more. If jeff keeps it up, id say by charotte he will have the points lead. But Sterling has run decent to good at the upcoming tracks, and Gordon does historicly slump near the end of hte season, remember '97?

The first half of the season I would have put money on Sterling falling off the lead before mid point. But, now he has gotten serious with his racing and actually running like a champion....so I don't put him out of the picture at all. However all that point's racing he did the first 12 or 14 races this season has made his job a little tougher......what is it 91 points ahead of Jeffie? One race and he's out of it if he gets a dnf and Jeffie gets a win......that's not much of a cushion. Jeffie's hot but so is Marlin and Martin........watch out for Tony too. Anyone's race at this point.:D

I think Jeff can do it, and it's any of the top 7's to win.

Well, Dega notwithstanding the grind is just beginning with the majority of the races on semi-shorts and flat tracks. While the medium banked tri-ovals are a gauge of a cars horsepower and areo, it is the flats that gauge the driver.

Add in the slip and slide at Louden, the dogleg and decreasing radius of turn 4 at Phoenix, and the biggest flat track on circuit to finish it up and what we got is a thing called "that's racin".

Still any of the top 6 at this point in my opinion. Could be even deeper.

And ol' Sterling's been known to win him a plate race or three.

You're right there TWF........but he's also been caught up the "big one" a time or three too!! Dega is an equalizer of sorts!:D

Anything can happen during a plate race, or any other race for that matter. This year the plate races have been good to Sterling.

An 8th and 3rd at Daytona and 'Dega was a 5th.

Biggest key to this pointi s that no one has been able to sustain a strong run on the points lead. We're heading into turn 4 of the season now with the drive to the finish line coming up. By the time the season enters that final stretch the contest should be narrowed to two or three contenders.

This should be fun!:)

The plate races and the "big one" that always accompanies that, may be the litmus test. All it takes is one split second of bad luck at "Dega and a whole season of racing is flushed right down the toilet. Gotta love plate "racing".

TN...I was being facetious. I don't even think plate "racing" is actually RACING! It's more like a square dance or something..."grab your partner, swing them around, etc...". It just kills me to think that the Big One that those plates cause will possibly decide who wins the Cup.

And just remember that the fuel tanks at 'Dega will be smaller this year. That just might make the difference. JMO, but Sterling could lose the #1 spot sometime this month (Sept.). And any of the top 7 could be the one to take it away. Sterling has been driving good races, and finishing them, but that could change in just one race with a wreck/dnf. My best guesses would be J.Gordon, T.Stewart, M.Martin. (In no particular order after J.Gordon:D )

Sorry people, but IMHO, plate racing is not racing anymore.
Way too controlled and the plate specialists rarely win anywhere else.

1/4 to go, may the BEST DRIVER win. PURRRRRRRRRRRRR

I know I'm partial but I believe that if Jeff doesn't have any mechanical trouble or get caught up in a wreck or two that it's his title to lose. That and I just can't stand the thought of Sterling winning a title. That would be a sad, sad day.

I'm not a Sterling Marlin fan but would it really be "a sad, sad day"?

Just joking.........well sort of.:D

Seems to me that Sterling coulda lost the lead every month since he got out front so yea, I guess he *could* lose it this month too.

Has there even been a single race this year that he was not in jeopardy tho?

I don't remember any 71. Like I said earlier, I'm real surprised he's still leading!!:) But, my opinion is that he points raced for 12 or 14 races way early this season....and that is why he is in such jeopardy of losing the lead every race. But, then again had he been all out he could have wrecked and be out of the lead too.:) It's getting real good and gonna be fun to watch how it all unfolds.:D

I wouldn't at all mind it if Sterling won the championship. It'd be a lot more interesting a story than a 5th Jeff Gordon championship -- no offense intended at all, Gordon fans...

Or Mark Martin. Or Tony Stewart -- barring he doesn't quit NASCAR immediately afterwards. Or any number of people. I like all these guys and can appreciate what each of them has endured to get this far in the points race.

And since my main guy isn't at all in contention, I can be as gracious as I want to be. :D

Your main guy and my main guy is so far out of contention that I, too, have found myself being gracious.......but, not Sterling!!:) I've watched him race for years and never could get excited about him. If he wins, I will be happy for him but I ain't gonna root for him.:) Right now, I keep watching Tony (and last year I thought about Tony like I think about Robby this year!!). Maybe it's the sympathy factor over what Home Depot did publicly to him but, damn, I would like to see him do it!!:) Anyone else in the running I could be happy for too.:) Weird season.:jumping:

I think it would be cool also if Jimmie Johnson won, being the first rookie to win a championship. The media would love that.

It sure is a weird one DE. The season is nearly over and there are still a handful of drivers still in reach of the championship. The weird thing is, I see Sterling pulling it off, after all of the doubters saying that he couldnt...

You could be right Awesome.......I was one of those doubters up till a few weeks ago.:D

It would be the sleeper story of the year -- Sterling persevering despite endless obstacles, including a late season Jeff Gordon win streak.

I think I'd prefer Tony, but I just don't get the feeling it's his year. I think Ricky Rudd is too far out of contention, no? Don't see that in the cards either. Mark Martin may not have shown his full hand just yet... ;)

it be amazing " jeff wins w/o everham or his tight squeeze brooke" showing its not about them its him and God
