Kenseth has 4 wins, 9 top 5s and 13 top 10s and he's in 8th place...

Marlin has 2 wins, 8 top 5s and 14 top 10s and he's in first place.

NASCAR points system is for the birds...

Paul, why are you so negative about everything that happens in NASCAR?

In some ways the point system makes no sense, it has flawa as do all of them.

In some ways it does make sense, statistics are fun that way.

Sterling Marlin average finish 15.07

Matt Kenseth average finish 16.73

Yeah, but they should make it so that a win pulls you up a little higher...

Oh, and what were you saying B.C.?

But, Paul, it's one part of the rules that NASCAR hasn't tinkered with yet!!:D

Let's be thankful for that anyway!!:)

the point sytem is based on finishing best! not first!
it also works well in that it takes care of a qualifing wash out.

in years pass if they gave extra points for winning you'd complain that JG was getting an advantage!

As I have said before, I think the current system is a fair barometer of a race team over 36 weeks. If a dude finishes first 10 times, and 30th or worse everywhere else, I don't think he deserves to be series champion. Consistent performance over a 36 race season, on all the different types of tracks, is what is rewarded. What we have is as fair as anything I have seen, or better than any alternative I have read.

Personally I think they should add a 5 point bonus for grabbing the pole. 2nd get 4 points 3rd gets three and so on. Then they should offer a 5 point bonus for leading at half way. That way it keeps the drivers racing hard for the lead from beginning to end.

Not a bad idea. But, the present points system is not bad either. Like TWF said putting too much emphasis on winning makes it possible for a driver to win several races and finish way out of the top runners in the rest of the races and still win the championship.......that doesn't seem right to me. Also, qualifying is not often an indication of how the driver will do in the actual race. Many drivers are poor qualifiers but good racers in the race. I like it for the potential of 10 extra points each race though. That would make "points racing" a little more chancey.:D

The present points system takes that into account........places a lot of wieght on consistancy. Though, in theory, you could win the championship without winning a race, you cannot win the championship without finishing consistantly well. A pretty well thought out system if you ask me.:)

So you want to throw out the DNF's and poor finishes just because someone has more wins? :)
