how the hell do the points work this year? unofficial results shows Bayne with 0 points and Carl with 42 then it steps down as expected. But why does Bayne have 0?

Because he picked the Nationwide series to run for the Championship in so he gets no points in cup.

Because Bayne declared running only the NNS series for points.

Crap, I forgot. They only said i 10 times during the race. Thanks.

LOL (not at you, chrome, but at the system). Brian told us that NA__AR's biggest problem was that the fans didn't understand the point system. One points race into the new system and people are already scratching their heads and asking, "WTF?"

If Brian wants to clear up something really confusing, simplify the formula for a driver NOT in the Chosen 35 getting into the 500.

I don't think the "pick a series" should apply to rookies. This is a perfect example as to why.

Very interesting that everyone is commenting on Bayne not getting any points, but no one is talking about Stewart in the Nationwide race and Waltrip in the truck race also getting 0 points. NASCAR paid no first place points over the weekend.

Correct, that is why I don't know why everyone is making such a big deal about Bayne not getting any points, yet he still gets credit for the wild card in the top 20, if he chooses to continue in Cup. So why should he be eligible for that it he isn't eligble for points?

Wouldn't that suck if he missed the top 20 by ~40 points... I read on someone's analysis somewhere that you pretty much will need 2 wins to have a good shot at making it into the chase if you're in the top 20. So, he'll likely have to pick up another for things to really have a chance of panning out. Ya never know though.

Well I doubt Stewart will be running anymore nationwide races so that really doesn't matter. I get what your saying though.

I really hate to say this but I have to admit..... Brian France was right! This new points system is much easier to understand. You win a race, you don't collect any points. So far 4 for 4.

So how's this going to play out when you get the majority of wins by Cup guys in both the lower divisions? No points, they have the most wins and the regulars of each series are playing second fiddle as usual. So I ask this, what did this solve?

Nothing more than assuring that a full time Cup driver does not win the Nationwide title by pretending that they don't exist. Other than that, nothing.

Maybe it's time for the drivers on the lower series to get more aggressive with cup drivers instead of pulling over to let them drive by.

The lower guys seldom get any respect when they run a cup race so maybe they should return the favor.

Granted, we are now only two races into the Nationwide season but the more I look at the results of this new point structure, the more asinine it appears. No disrespect to Danica but 4th in points? Seriously? She finished 14th and 17th respectively this season to date. By the time this season comes to a conclusion, given the normal trend, the top 10 in points will probably look like a list of backmarkers and NASCAR will be crowning an artificial champion.

You are starting to sound like Andy

I agree, I'll state this again, Nascar did not take into consideration all the possibilities before institutuing a new system. This should of been obvious from the start, Cup guys dominating wins, but Nascar just can't admit it to themselves that the only way Nationwide is ever going to have it's own Identity is if you limit starts by Cup drivers.

I think they do understand that. They also understand that no Cup drivers = No Sponsors = No series.

It's a tough nut to crack.

Seems to me the series did just fine when there were only a few Cup guys running sporadically in past years. I know this is different times and all, but I think that is a poor excuse.

Excuse? It's not an excuse. It's simply how it is.

The Daytona 500 winner from 1 week ago couldn't get a sponsor for his Nationwide car. Think about that and what it means. If he can't get a sponsor, how do you expect an unknown driver to get one?

Just because you "win'" the D 500 doesn't mean anything...The D 500 is a crap shoot and everyone knows that...Even Cope won the 500

True, but what Sponsors want is publicity. Driver skill isn't important. For evidence, look no further than Dale Jr and Danica, both of whom don't win races. Every time I turn on the TV, I see Bayne being interviewed.

Again, if a guy with that much media exposure can't get a sponsor the rest of the field has little chance of landing one.

The series needs to survive on it's own or die, it is a mockery right now, it is not being used for what it was created for. Let the up and coming guys run in their own series, only allow Cup guys 6 races per season. The Cup guys that field teams in the series will once again use developmental drivers like it was intended. They will find a way to attract sponsors, if they don't maybe it is time this series ran its' course and died.

So essentially you have 2 divisions of Cup, Cup A and Cup B, how is that any good?

Maybe it could be that Roush wants to much sponsor money for his Nationwide car, especially since the driver just won the 500.

I don't see much of a way out either. It's pretty much impossible to cut costs, as the big guys will always spend on something.

I don't see how running a car with no sponsor dollars makes more economical sense than running a car with less money than you'd like...or am I missing something here?

100% agreement.

My thought is to limit how many races a cup regular can run in nationwide. I say 5 max. If at the start of the season a driver commits to running for points in cup then they should be limited to 5 nationwide and 5 truck series races. the same would apply to nationwide drivers or trucks.
If I had money to sponsor a team I feel I would get more bang for my buck as an associate sponsor in cup than a primary sponsor in nationwide, due to the fact that most of the TV time is spent focusing on the cup regulars.
Get it back to the times when a cup regular was welcome to a lower series to help bring notoriety and not to dominate.
The points deal was a good start but it needs to be taken further.

Sorry I didn't see your post, but we are thinking along the same lines.
