Really Kyle 3rd?

Hey, it's his list.

I always like to simplify these conversations into top 3. That way there isn't much to argue about.

Wasn't criticizing him
Would actually like an explanation though.

I agree that it is impossible to accurately compare drivers across eras and how do you accurately rate a driver you have never seen perform? I have no doubt Ned Jarrett and Lee Petty were dandies but I ain't never seen 'em race. Bobby Isaac was a tremendous driver and Nascar champion that no one remembers but he got high praise from the Silver Fox which is gold in my book. Davey Allison and Tim Richmond were very good but they had careers cut short and then you had guys in mediocre equipment like Harry Gant do well for a number of year but he doesn't have any championships or 20 wins.

Another anomaly is Richard Petty and his 200 wins and 7 championships which at first blush looks great but when you start delving into things they don't look nearly as impressive as what Dale did. On the other hand Richard did well in the modern era amassing 60 wins and 3 champs so how do you quantify things?

I will say, if I was forced to pick the #1 greatest of all time, it would be tough not to pick Dale Earnhardt.

In the modern era it would be difficult to not pick Dale as he got 7 the hard way with different crew chiefs plus all those wins.

1. Dale Earnhardt
2. Jeff Gordon
3. Richard Petty
4. Jimmie Johnson
5. Bobby Allison
6. David Pearson
7. Darrell Waltrip
8. Cale Yarborough
9. Bill Elliott
10. Rusty Wallace

HM - Terry Labonte, Tony Stewart, Joe Weatherly, Fireball Roberts, Dale Jarrett, Mark Martin, Ricky Rudd, Kyle Busch

Really Kyle 3rd?

From a statistical point of view IDK how Kyle makes it in the top 10 at this point but with 38 wins but he is a lot closer than many. He has averaged 3 wins a year over his last 5 seasons plus this year so if he can maintain that pace for another 15 years he will end up with 83 for his career which would put him 1 ahead of Jimmie Johnson if JJ retired today.

1. Jimmie Johnson
2. Kyle Busch
3. Dale Earnhardt
4. Darrell Waltrip
5. Bill Elliott
6. Jeff Gordon
7. Richard Petty
8. Tony Stewart
9. Rusty Wallace
10. Bobby Allison

1. Dale Earnhardt
2. Jeff Gordon
3. Richard Petty

This would be the top 3 I talked about earlier. Only I would go by era.

Richard, Dale and Gordon.

Although Gordon's place in that top 3 is in jeopardy. Jimmie has to be top 4..almost top 3 in my book.

Some interesting picks as I didn't expect to see Dale so low, Kyle so high and it is hard to believe that Kyle, Bill, Tony and Rusty made your list but not Cale. Cale was one of the toughest ever and won over 40 races in a 5 year period plus 3 championships.

Yeah, I don't think most people take the stat padding seriously but there are a few that do.

Call it what you will but the numbers are there and few drivers can even get close. its not like I am throwing in wins from some non Nascar series here.

I cannot do a full 10 today without thinking about it too much but 5:

Richard Petty
Dale Earnhardt
Jimmie Johnson
Jeff Gordon
David Pearson

That looks right to me combining importance to the sport, championships and wins.

Really hard to ignore the fact that my dog could win the caliber of xfinity and truck equipment that he's in.

That is it as there is no honor or valor in going to a lesser series with shorter races and inferior competition and claiming a victory. It would be like a second or third year college running back returning to his high school on Friday nights and suiting up and rushing for 500 yards. No bueno.

My opinion is that this modern era if NASCAR has alot more talent therefore my top two are from this era. 3rd is pretty high think and the perfect place for Dale although I can understand an argument for him being #1. As for Cale it was between him and Bobby Allison for the 10 spot and I went with Bobby.

Really Kyle 3rd?

Do I like the guy at all no cannot stand him one bit not many people in this world I dislike more than him honestly can he drive a race car yes he's unbelievably good behind the wheel is he better than Richard Petty I believe so because Teddy really didn't have a lot of competition throughout those 200 wins is it better than Dale Earnhardt maybe maybe not

JJ is a wheel master...that "200 mph save" at dega was great. hes top 5 for sure.

I'm convinced Kyle Busch will ultimately be a top 10 driver, maybe even top 5. He has the talent, if not the temperament...yet.

When the sport changes the rules of the game due to your dominance of said sport, that puts you up there in terms of importance to the sport.

For some reason being ill tempered and being fractious is equated with passion, hating to lose and being competitive but I think JJ is the perfect person to dispel that notion. He never seems to get rattled or lose his cool but obviously has a burning desire to win but chooses not to behave like a horses ass when he doesn't.

Losing is easier when you can go home to 7championships on the shelf.

I respect JJ immensely. I happen to enjoy the racing personalities of drivers like Kyle, Brad, etc. It doesn't mean they are my "heroes," role models, etc. I root for the Empire sometimes in Star Wars even though I know how it ends. I love a good villain. NASCAR needs a few more IMO. :)
