Gail Davis...............#23.......10 provs used this year
Junie Donlavey.......#90.........9 provs used this year
Glen Wood.............#21.........9 provs used this year
Rick Hendrick...........#5..........8 provs used this year
AJ Foyt...................#14..........7 provs used this year
Kyle Petty..............#44..........7 provs used this year
Diane Bodine.........#11..........7 provs used this year

If you think that's bad, Darrell Waltrip used 20 provisionals in 1998, and the Wood Bros. used 15 last year.

I thought it amazing when I read Jeff Gordon has never taken a provisionsal in WC.

Is that fact or fantasy?

In 320 starts Jeff Gordon has used a total of 0 provisionals.

Don't worry I think he'll probably quit after four more championships.

Tho I'll not count Jeff out, I'm not sure he can get one or two more, let alone four.

Parity has caught him.....and it shows.

How many provisionals did Petty racing use last year among the 3 cars?

Hey.........if you got em use em!! That's what they are for!! Gets you into the race............until you run out!!:)

i say if your not atleast 43rd fastest then you should go home!!

I like provisionals, but there should be a set amount that a team can use over the entire season.

One thing to remember is that all teams start the year with the same number of provs but that the top 25 teams are not charged for using them. In theory a car can use a provisional to enter each and every race of the year.

Trickle was 39th quick for the Subway 400 but did not get in.
Hornaday at Texas 41st quick
Renfrow was 39th quick at Martinsville and didn't get in.
Robinson and Mast at Dega
Gaughan, Little, and Sadler at California.
Kevin Grubb was 37th quick at Richmond....didn't get to race.
Long and Little would have both made the Coca-Cola 600 on time.
Cope and Sadler the last race at Dover.
Compton and Ash at Sears Point
Ed Berrier in the 90 car at the Pepsi 400
Hornaday, Shelmerdine, and Raines at Chicago
Carl Long again at Pocono
Hornady, Cope, Wimmer, and Raines at Indy
Austin Cameron at Watkins Glen
Greg Biffle in a Roush Ford at Michigan
Sadler and Long at Bristol
Long again at Richmond
And Long again at New Hampshire.

And today, Bodine gets burned because he was one of many that kept these others from possibly being full time themselves. Pretty hard to get sponsor bucks when ya can't make the show even when yer quick enuf to be there.

Carl Long has tried to make a whole bunch of races this year. Sure he ain't been fast enuf at some of them but FOUR times he packed up early after coming with a machine good enuf to get in.

Provisonals suck big time and ought to be scrapped.

I would like to see them do away with provisionals. Put your best stuff on the track, show'em what you got. If it isn't good enough, go home. If this is the best racing on the planet, then only the best should race. The only exception would be a crash in qualifying. Then you could have a freebie. Only two freebies per team per year. No trading or selling freebies and no carry overs for the next year. ( Just my $0.02):)

i say if your not atleast 43rd fastest then you should go home!!
but lets say there is 46 cars in qualifying, marlin gordon and junior wreck, and 3 part timers make the feild over them, do you want that, i know nascar dont

Ever hear of 2nd round qualifying?

but that's right, nascar did away with that.

I think they do allow too many per season but I am against allowing none at all. I suggested back when they took away 2nd round qual that all DRIVERS (not owners) get 2, then every 4th race they run they earn 1 more and are awarded them based on drivers points. Technically speaking a driver could still use as many as 10 that way but would be forced to earn them more than this present system. Also if a driver went to a new team mid season this would allow him a chance to get in. Carl Long has been bitten by the current provs based on Owners Points already 3 times this year but had enough driver points to be able to compete. That is hardly fair.
New drivers into the series mid season can fall back too easily on the present prov system by getting rides with a team that has plently of provisionals left. Make em earn their way in after their 2nd race and then we might see a better quality of racing from them and their team.
