National series qualifying at Talladega will now consist of the following:

  • Three rounds with the first round divided into two groups amongst the competitors. The first qualifying round is five minutes in length for each group. This is a change with the field divided into two groups. The rest of qualifying is the same as has been done this season.
  • Competitors will be assigned to a first qualifying round group based on the random draw held earlier in the event.
  • The 24 eligible competitors that post the fastest single lap speed from either of the first qualifying round groups will advance to the second round. The remaining competitors will be sorted based on their speed posted in the first round of qualifying in descending order.
  • There will be a 10-minute break after the completion of the first qualifying round and the 24 remaining competitors that advance to the second round will have their times reset.
  • The second qualifying round is five minutes in length and the 12 eligible competitors that post the fastest single lap speed will advance to the third and final round.
  • The fastest remaining competitors will earn positions 13-24 based on their fastest single lap speed posted in qualifying in descending order.
  • Following a five minute break, the 12 eligible competitors that advance to the final round will have their posted speeds reset.
  • The final qualifying round is five minutes in length and the fastest single lap speed will determine positions 1-12 in descending order.

“This revision in national series qualifying at Talladega should be more exciting for our fans,” said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR senior vice president of competition and racing development. “It will feature a more accelerated pace, provide greater opportunity for team strategy to come into play and it should more closely resemble actual racing conditions.”

I knew you'd get it. Those Danica's..... They're always just a little behind the rest of the field.

I love Danica, but that's hilarious. :XXROFL:

As for the qualifying format, if they wanted to more closely simulate actual racing conditions, why not just do two heat races like they do at Daytona? Y'know, since single car runs are apparently too boring and now we need to have a Chase for the Pole format, complete with rounds and eliminations and all.

Dale Jr. said before that he'd like to see 'heat races' done there.

All of this at a place where qualifying means next to nothing. Four of the top twelve finishers in May started 34th, 35th, 41st, and 42nd while only three of them started in the top fifteen. Seems to me they could direct their efforts elsewhere.

People bitched and complained about the restrictor plate qualifying so they're making an attempt to rectify that. Not sure that's a bad thing.

Probably too costly, considering the chance of a big wreck. I don't think owners want to double that likelihood.

I know, right? They should just have all the top drivers in points draw straws or pull their names out of a hat. If more than 43 people attempt to qualify, take the go-or-go-home drivers and let them draw straws separately or pull their names out of a different hat for the remaining spots.

Oh, sorry JJ Yeley, Milka and Morgan beat you this week. Better luck next time!

Maybe I am missing the point but I don't see what changed besides splitting the first round into two groups. All cars eligible for a given round/group will still all be on track at the same time right? So the gimmicky draft manipulating stuff would still play out such as blocking a line of cars with a good run or the car last in line having the fastest time.

I am disappointed they didn't change to having two duel races for all restrictor plate races... Either that or go back to one at a time.

LOL

Also, what about teams in the first group having more time to cool down their engines?

So if you're in the second group, you're pretty much f****d engine wise. It would be better if the first round was done on Friday with the cars split, and then finish qualifying on Saturday so all cars have had equal time to cool their engines.

Remember the good ole' days of the 2000s when the Daytona 500 would draw 60 cars? Take this new qualifying format but forget splitting the field and let all 60 of em' run at once

Why don't we just have heats and heats only? I just don't get why we'd do it any other way at restrictor plate tracks.

This wont fix anything. Ford wont work with Chevy wont work with Toyota.

Here's a simpler solution to the 'go slow' crap....run any lap under a 190mph average and you get the black flag and start at the back of the field.

Its not ideal, but it will fix things a bit, at least at the start. You have 5 minutes to get your lap. That means you can't mess around and figure out if I should go or not. 5 minutes gives you time for 2 maybe, 3 laps around. So in that case you better go or not.

5 minutes sure ain't much time! This will be drafting qualifying at it's best, with a pull out at the last second before the start finish line, get the wreckers ready boys, it's a gonna happen!
