Johnson sets track record in qualifying

KANSAS CITY, KAN. -- Jimmie Johnson easily won the Banquet 400 Bud Pole on Friday, running a lap of 180.373 to set a new track record at Kansas Speedway.
The old record, 177.924 mph, was set last year by Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Congratulations to Jimmie Johnson for setting the Pole.

Good run by Dale Jr starting up front ! Matt Kenseth using a provisional.

Way to go Jimmie!

It's always bad form to be happy for other peoples problems, but I can't help saying I hope Matt has a couple other really bad races just to spice up the last Winston Cup Championship....wouldn't be great if that last couple races really mattered for the Cup!?

(I really do like Matt!)

Great Job by Jeff Green! That #43 team has really come together with Jeff Green behind the wheel. It's good to see that Elliott shook off the effects of the wreck to qualify top ten. And it looks like RCR spent a lot of time making sure there wouldn't be a repeat of last week. Steve Park fastest of the RCR bunch!

Foyt runs faster than Martin, Kenseth, Andretti, and Burton.....and still does not make the race.

It just ain't right.

I am pizzed about Matt backing into the wall in practice run and needing a provisional. He is one of my Fantasy Picks this week :9

matt came just about a hair from hittin the wall again, mark martin too. What was funny was jr. was about 4 cars from the end of qualifying and as soon as his run was done 75% of the 30,000 plus crowd started heading out, damn people paid 10-15 bucks just to see jr. qualify. I like jr. but I went there for more than just to watch him qualify.

matt is just as puzzled he said " my car when i get on the throttle into the corner the rear end breaks loose" like I said he damn near hit the wall on his first lap and tiptoed on the second.

Let's just thank the powers that be for provisionals if they are EARNED.

Kevin didn't qualify verry good. But then again he very seldom does. But it's the end result that matters. :D

provs are a joke. and a bad one at that.

always have been and always will be.

Here is a Yogi Berra"ism" for ya.

The only way to earn a starting spot is to earn it.
If ya don't earn it ya don't race.
If yer slow ya dint earn it.
If yer fast, ya did.

And to clear the entire thing up from da ole WHIZZER's point of view and stated by another old wag, "GO FAST OR GO HOME".

Under these conditions, Matt Kenseth would be sucking hind nipple on the pig. Right now he's hanging tough by provisionals. Not that Matt ain't worthy or did not earn every point he has accumulated to get to his current position in the point standings, BUT provisionals sure are treating him good and his luck is still holdin' out. He'll be okay but this is hard to take at this point in time.

Maybe Matt isn't as tough mentally as the season nears the end and he is being challenged in that department from the pressure and perhaps trying just a tad too hard ??

Wonder if Matt will be the first driver to win the championship with several provisionals noted by an asterick??

I hope we're not going through that luck crap again :p

This only Matt's 3rd prov of the year. He might just be on his way to setting a record and although I don't know what the record is I would imagine that say 4 or 5 might be the magic number.

by manipulating the dates on Jayski's prov pages I've found that Tony used ZERO last year, that Jeff used ZERO the year before that, and that Bobby used TWO the year before that.....the page goes blank when I try for 1999.

Would be an interesting stat to research further that's for sure. Did find this at Jays tho not sure if any of the years correspond to the drivers winning the Cup in the same year they won a race from a prov spot but it is interesting.

from Jays............
