DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHEN THEY STARTED KISSING THE BRICKS AFTER THE RACE? HOW THIS TRADITION STARTED AND WHAT YEAR WAS THE FIRST TIME. I DON'T THINK THAT I HAVE EVER HEAR ANYBODY SAY HOW THIS STARTED...I KNOW THAT JEFF WON THE FIRST YEAR BUT I GOT THE FEELING THAT HE DID NOT START THIS KISSING BUSINESS.. ANYBODY KNOW...THANKS...

I remember it happening in the Indy 500 lots of times. Perhaps it's just a carry over from the open wheel days before NASCAR hit the Bricks.

Thats a good quesion that I don't know. ;)

Dale Jarrett was the first to kiss the bricks after hiswin there in 1998 I belive it was. I don't know how it started but I think Jarrett was just showing his respect for the history of the track!

I guess I never really thought about who or how kissing the bricks got started. They kissed them in open wheel prior to 1998, right? So it probably is a carry over from that.

I don't recall that the Indy 500 folks ever kissed the bricks.....maybe but I don't remember it.

To the best of my knowledge the tradition was started by Dale Jarrett in 1996 and has become accepted as a stock car tradition at Indianapolis.

Kissing the bricks was not a tradition for the 500! ther might have been a few trhat did do it but it never became a tradtion untill DJ did it in 1996!

Well now I don't know who kissed the bricks first. Maybe someone needs to ask Jeff Hammond. He knows everything......

Nah..... them TV people are too busy kissing Helton's ass.

Guido, You are probably right, but at this rate I will never find out who kissed the bricks for the first time and why??? I looked through all of my racing books and nothing on the kissing business.....

Ricky Rudd was the first to "kiss the bricks" following his Brickyard 400 win in 1997. As to why, well, we assume it was just the excitement of winning at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It has since become tradition for the winner of the Brickyard 400.

Came across this article also here. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/artic...9-2003Aug1.html. Scroll down to read this.

Said Dale Jarrett, who started the tradition of kissing the yard of bricks that mark the track's start-finish line after winning the 1996 Brickyard 400: "When we came here, it gave a lot of credibility to our sport that for the first time in the history of this hallowed speedway, they were going to allow something besides IndyCars here."
