A couple of fans e-mailed me Monday asking how Johnson could finish 14th and serve a pit-road speeding penalty in the final laps. A NASCAR spokesman said Johnson came down pit road to serve his pass-through penalty as he took the checkered flag.

Since a driver has a couple of laps leeway before answering the black flag, that's apparently perfectly legal. That doesn't make it right.

The penalty is supposedly making a driver pass down the pit lane at pit-road speed. If Johnson takes the checkered on the pit lane, he's not serving the same penalty anybody else had to for the same infraction earlier in the race.

That rule needs to be looked at.

I think it was Jeff Burton did kind of the same thing durring the Winston, his pit box was really close to the finish line, and he pited comming to the checkerd flag, got his tires and just crossed the line, he got 1st or 2nd....after that NASCAR made it to were you had to pit b4 the white flag.

This is a picture of Jimmie doing his pit road penalty as you can see Tony crossing the finish line on the apron behind Jimmie.

I sure hate defending Jimmie cause I don't really like him but I believe this is proof Jimmie did actually fullfill the obligation to his stop & go.
Jimmie was a lap down before Tony ran out of gas, but because Tony ran out of gas Jimmie was allowed to exit pit road and complete his final lap to be on the lead lap. IF he had not exited PR and made another lap, he would've remained a lap down.

while i may not really like what he did, i still say it was smart, if its not against the rules, may as well try it right?

Just another creative way to get around the rules. I'd say this is another rule that will be changed for next year.

When would you have liked him to have done his drive through?

He got the penalty with 2 1/2 laps to go, he did his drive through with 1 to go? WTF do you want???

Johnson DID serve penalty: [since I am tired of answering this question] #48-Jimmie Johnson DID serve the pass-thru penalty after getting caught speeding on his final pit stop at Kansas Speedway. On Speed's Victory Lane it was mentioned Johnson had not served the penalty, no place else was it reported, it was reported on MRN coverage that Johnson did serve the penalty, Larry McRaynolds explains this at FoxSports.com: "There's no question that he served the penalty. It's the reason he finished 14th. The #48 car had a pretty good lead when he attempted to make his green-flag stop. Most of the cars running near the front — Greg Biffle, Jeff Burton, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Carl Edwards — made pit stops as well. Those guys ended up finishing in front of Johnson because they did have to serve a pass-through penalty. As he [Johnson] approached pit road to make his green-flag stop, the #9 car spun out coming to pit road. Making a great move back on the track, Johnson anticipated that a caution was going to come out. If the caution had been thrown, a ton of cars would have gone a lap down, and he would have been in pretty good shape. Johnson probably would have come to pit road and taken four fresh tires, which would have put him in position to win the race. Unfortunately for Johnson, the caution did not wave. When he finally came back around to make a green-flag stop, he knew that he had given up a lot of time slowing down to come to pit road and then getting back up to speed on the last lap. There's a chance that he went over the speed limit to make up ground. If pit road speed at Kansas was 45 mph, Johnson was going in excess of 50 in at least one of the eight to 10 sections of pit road measured by loops. He only had to be speeding in one of those sections to get penalized. The penalty under green is called a pass-through. The driver has to come back to pit road. He doesn't have to stop in his pits, but he must maintain pit road speed. His Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Kyle Busch, was caught speeding under caution at lap 196, and the penalty under caution is starting at the tailend of the longest line."(10-3-2006)

1st SPEED said Harvick and Burton had trick rims, and now they are saying Jonhson did not serve his pently......they sure are hard on the chevy teams latly.

Wait, Jimmie first tried to pit but darted back out on the track thinking there would be a caution. Then he does come down and gets gas and two tires, then he has to serve a penalty meanwhile Tony never pits and coasts down the back stretch and across the finish line and Jimmie somehow stays on the lead lap? I am confused.

He wasn't on the lead lap, he was a lap down. There was also only 7 cars on the lead lap but when the leader of the race runs out of gas and coasts 3/4 of the track to the win, 7 cars got their lap back. The picture clearly shows Jimmy exiting the pits to do his final lap as Tony crosses the finish line.

Jimmie Johnson...

I don't think that was legitimate. Johnson did finish the race on the lead lap btw. If he had not served the penalty, because he was on the lead lap, he would not have lost any positions in the lineup. NASCAR would revert him to the final car on that lap (essentially it was a win/win).

It seems as though, with a small bit of bickering, all have agreed that the rules need to be changed. It's always the same...when someone finds a loop hole, others cry and gripe. Though I'm not a big fan of JJ, (Johnson that is) I can't fault him and his crew for finding a way to make this better.

As long as we are talking about changing rules, we all know that teams have a certain number of laps in which to honor the black flag. I believe that it's five laps, but not sure. I can see it now that if someone who is leading with two or three laps to go is black flagged and they don't honor the flag, they will be crimialized for not taking that flag and instead getting the checkered flag. It's all in the rules and in order to keep order, there must be rules.

Don't we all hate those little loop holes that people find?

I had just assumed the rule had been changed for all Nascar events, not just the Winston. (whatever it's called) I only hate the loop holes if it's Johnson, Stewart, or Ky Busch. LOL

Goodness, I would think that the way you feel about Ky taking the reigns from Terry is tearing you up inside. My condolences to you my friend. :)

I sure as heck don't see a need for a rule change, nor do I see as Jimmie and Chad found a loophole.

They only had 2 1/2 laps when the penalty was issued to strart with. He had to go atleast1 lap before he could go down pit road..

The picture clearly hows he's doing his drive through down pit road and (because he ran out of gas and was just coasting) was in front of Tony putting JJ back on the lead lap, but had he not gone around and completed that lap he would still scored a lap down. You can't fool the transponders.

I can't believe this, I can't stand Jimmie but when there's clear evidence to prove he didn't do anything wrong you have to admit when you're wrong. Guess there's some having a hard time with that.

I suppose some would want Jimmie to serve his penalty @ Tally since he didn't have time to do so - to their satisfaction - @ KC.

I don't know why, but this made me laugh, thanks.
