Question About the 28

Hi and Thank you guys for letting me join. I have a quick question that I've been wondering about. What ever become of the #28? I know Yates had it on his cars at one time and I guess that he still owns it. I was just wondering why he quit running the #28. Its been awhile I guess cause I had just started getting into Racing at the time and I remember Rudd used to drive the #28 Car.

My understanding is Yates has the rights to 28 in Cup competition, and there was some sort of squabble with Havoline. I could be wrong though.

Welcome aboard Jmac!

Like EMP, I'm not POSITIVE, but I think the #28 is tied in with Havoline. Yates and Havoline did have a dispute over the use of the number for sure.

All I know for certain is I will always associate the number with Davey Allison. :(

I thought I had heard somewhere that Yates returned the number to get the 38, I see what I can find out.

I have confidence in you Bow...ever since you discovered Marty Robbins car number for me you have been impressive!

Thanks guys! This question has been in my mind for awhile. And I just couldn't remember. I'm not really familiar with Davey Allison other then what I've heard about, on How good a driver he was.

I think Yates considered the 28 a bad luck number after Ernie's near death experience.

Thanks For having me majestyx!! Its a Pleasure to be here and I know I'll enjoy it here

that is a davey# and will be a while b/f it is used again.

but i still beleive it is his #,

yeah i know, digging up an old thread

They were talking about that last week since Yates is giving up the 88 for Earnhardt. It was mentioned that there was a "time limit" on how long Yates could not use the 28 which was established by Havoline and apparently it is up very soon. Specualtion is that the 28 is coming back.

Then wouldn't the same apply to RCR and the #3? That one has not been used since Feb. 2001, two years longer than the #28 has not been used.

Did you get all the info you needed on #28? What I understood was that Havoline has the rights to that number. You notice that the number disappeared from Robert Yates Racing when Havoline left to join Ganassi's team. Yates racing cannot use the number without permission from Havoline. When Ricky Rudd announced that he was comming out of retirement, he wanted to use the number but Havoline would not give consent.

With regard to the #3 - I think not running it now is a decision made by RCR and Dale themselves. I have never heard that GM would not allow that number to be run for a period of time. Dale Jr. has said he did not wanna run it to make his own name and not his daddy's.

As for the #28, during the news conference today they mentioned how it was nice of RYR to give up the number and the 28 was one of the numbers they had been looking at getting but were "sensitive" to the fact it meant a lot to RYR. They also said the number was available which seems to lend credence to the fact that RYR can use it again and probably will now that they gave up the 88.

it would be a great day to see the 28 again , but sad b/c we know who should be in it

I thought that Nascar owned the #'s? How could Havoline say that nobody can run the #28 without their permission? After a couple of years the # was suppose to become open and if anybody wanted it the previous user got first shot at it again to run otherwise the one wanting it would get it. Or at lest that was the way I understood it.
Don't think for now anybody wants to try the #28 and especially the #3, but at some time somebody will come along and want it. I could see Nascar retiring the #3 since DE won several championships and died during a race. Retiring a # should be a very restricted action though. I'm not too tied to any # even the #43. A person will be remembered by the generations that saw it ran.
