Question about the 7 car

owner is listed at Jim Smith...is that just to get the number from him? I thought he was an owner/driver, so why is Jim Smith the owner?

Well I know Jim Smith owns that number. But, I too, thought Robby was the owner of the car. There is probably some legal junk there that "legally" makes Jim Smith the owner when it's Robby's money on the line.

Damn.........now, I'm curious!! :(

It's a partnership of some sort between Robby Gordon and Jim Smith.

well, is it something like how mark martin owns the 17? I don't know, as was already said, the number 7 belongs to Jimmy Smith, but the race team is Robby Gordon Motorsports, I would have thought that he did it because it would have allowed him some car owner points this year for provisionals (like the 14 car) but they changed the rules so it doesn't matter because neither the 7 nor the 14 were in the top 35...could that be it?

ya may have hit the nail on the head with that one. that's what I was thinking also. for provisional points... but, then the rules change happened.

Robby Gordon announced the #7 thing prior to the change in the qualifying rules so the owner's points may have been part of the motivation.

Yeah, I think that's probably it, I'd look for him to not be the owner after this year or even during the year, I guess it was a "strategic partnership" or something like that. I never really saw why he would partner with Smith anyway, being a Dodge owner and all. Heck, when robby drove in the truck race it was for a chevy team anyway, so I never saw the connection. How many other numbers could he have used that had some remainder owner points? Aside from the 14? Maybe the 50?

and then he gets caught with an illegal part but that jim beam paint scheme looked pretty sharp

In all fairness to Robby, I believe the illeagal part was due to Menard as the motor came complete with the manfold. That's why the went with a DEI motor, because a regular manifold wouldn't fit the Menard motor.
I'm a little concerned about this partnership with Menard, totally unproven engines in the NASCAR divisions. I sure wish he could've done an engine deal with DEI or Gibbs.

i think robby was going to do the whole driver owner thing on his own and Jimmy Smith came to him and said he would like to invest in the team

Well Jim Smith already owned that team, Robby bought it from him. I'm more inclinded to think like TB said, it was to have some owner points for provisionals, but then the rules were changed and that no longer benifited him.

I would have to agree with Eagle. And on Menard's, they aren't TOTALLY unproven, when Robby didn't have RCR stuff in Busch last season, he had Menard's under the hood. Of course, that was Busch. Menard's does IRL engines, right? Well, I have to agree that it was probably Menard's fault and surely most crews (especially a newer one) would assume that the engine builder knows the specs and follows them...just look at it as a continuation of Robby's luck from Sonoma (Infineon) last year...someone forgot to tighten the lugnuts and he had a terrible race.

While Robbie does have some history with Menard, maybe he can't afford a DEI, Gibbs, Yates, etc motor. Those things are expensive and he is a new team. Maybe they need to put their money in other places for now.

very good points, but you gotta keep the sponsors happy, you know?

I remember reading off of Jayski when the announcement was made that Robby was starting his own team that he was going to be using Menards motors because Menard would only be building motors for him so his team would get Menards full attention. It said that he didnt want to lease second rate motors from the bigger teams because they wouldnt provide the same power that they give their own team.

Well, it doesn't appear that ALL motor builders do that. Look at Scott Riggs finish, with Hendrick power!
