Car - Thrust SSC

Type of Car - Jet

Metal Mulisha,

The 766 mark was the top speed recorded, BUT the record requires runs in both directions. The averages of each make up the record.

Guess Craig Breedlove's record is toast.....long ago!!:D

Yep Wrangler. But, that's what records are made for.

I haven't thought of Craig Breedlove for years (decades?) until this thread. He was going to try to break the sound barrier on land!:) Wasn't there a Beach Boys song about Breedlove?:)

Wrangler,

Breedlove did try to break the sound barrier, but his vehicle was too unstable...as for a Beach Boys song...hmm??? got me there.

Craig Breedlove had actually broken the record in the Spirit Of America while running in the salt flats, but wrecked the car and was unable to duplicate the run within an hour to make it official. That was an awesome vehicle. It had a jet engine converted to run on 93 octane. I believe the engine was from an F-1, but I could be mistaken. It actually had a bomb to detonate to cause the parachute to deploy in time to stop it (apparently necessary when braking the sound barrier). Can you imagine going that fast?

From the Beach Boys' Little Deuce Coupe album ... the song "Spirit of America"

Spirit of America
Spirit of America
Spirit of America

The Bonneville salt flats had seen some strange things
But the strangest thing yet was a jet without wings
Once as a jet it played in the stars
But now on the ground it's the king of our cars

Spirit of America
Spirit of America
Spirit of America
Spirit of America

An airplane an auto now famous worldwide
The Spirit of America, the name on the side
The man who would drive her Craig Breedlove by name
A daring young man played a dangerous game

Spirit of America
Spirit of America
Spirit of America
Spirit of America

With a J-47, a jet for his power
Craig Breedlove had averaged four-o-seven per hour
Both man and machine had given fair warn
They'd set a new record on that warm August morn.

Way back in the day my friend Sissy Johnson who's dad owned the electric cart concession at Ontario Motor Speedway got DieHard to sponsor her for a shot at the Women's Class B Electric Car Land Speed Record at Bonneville. Class B is single motor single battery.

She took it too. Timed out around 98mph with one run over 110 but burnt their last motor doing so and couldn't make a return trip to back it up.

If ya'll think garage and pit passes are cool, think of how much fun I used to have cruising Ontario in a golf cart. And Sissy knew like all the drivers. Gurney, Sneva, Mario, Foyt.....it was an awesome time in my life.
