What does it mean to "hang" a body? What are the steps to building a car? Any good websites?

As much of a car guy as I am 66 mustang I have no idea. I mean i can assume what that means but i really dont want to seem like an idiot

NASCAR Tech did a thing on that a wile back, pretty interesting but really had to condense for 30 min show.

They start with the rolling chasis, rollbars etc. and attach the body panels to this. Most ALL body panels are made in house, starting with flat sheet metal.
Think about that, all the man hours into fabricating the bodies the next time we see "the BIG ONE" or any wall slapper.

I have been through several fab shops and watched the process. Each piece of the body is shaped by hand. Rolled on English wheels until the curve is just right. Then placed on the frame.

The only pieces that come pre-formed are the hood, roof and deck lid. Even those are rough-stamped and have to be finished.

I beleive hanging a body is when you have the whole body of the car suspended to where you can do welding and body work on it when there is no "guts" in the car

i think it is when they put the body on the car, that s hangin the body;)

In all my times in the fab shops, I've never seen a whole skin without the chassis.

You have to remember, the sheet metal is thin, thin, thin. I don't think it could stand up by itself.

i was working at Rudd's when they were switching over from Thunderbird's to Taurus.........so i saw them do a lot of body work

they kept a few by just cuttin the supports off the car and setting them on part carts........the whole body........looked kinda funny

we actually raced 2 of them around the parking lot by pushing them LOL lot of fun

I'm just glad it doesn't mean something with a rope and 13 wraps above a noose!!:dunce:

And..............Welcome to the forum charlotteguy!! We have fun here. But we do tend to get a little wierd on the off season!!:D :beerchug:
