Ol' Smoke thought he had the field covered for the '57 Southern 500. The story of just how wrong he was is one of the high points in his biography everyone, whether they are race fans or not, should read. Here's the tragic half of the story with Paul Goldsmith's ride. Paul and Bobby Myers crashed into Herb Thomas' car being driven in relief by Fonty Flock as it sat on the backstretch after spinning out. Both Paul and Fonty were hurt but Chocolate Myers' daddy was killed in the crash.
