A lot has been said about Wendell Scott not getting to go to victory lane for his only race win at that Florida half mile track, and rightly so. But how much worse would he have felt if it had been the Southern 500? That's exactly what happened to my friend Larry Frank.
Look closely at the "victory lane" pics from the '62 Southern 500 and if you see a pic that doesn't look like Larry's head has been pasted on Junior Johnson's body then take a close look at the grandstand behind him. Yep, they're empty. Ever gracious, Larry came back the next day to pose for pics for next years program.
He may have missed Darlington's beauty queens but he wound up with one of his own in his lovely wife. Oh well, at least he got the right trophy.
If any of you are close to Greenville SC, drop by Larry's body shop and tell him the Ol' Redneck said hello and that I finally finished that '62 Ford.
