Race Fans Have a Problem With Talladega Nights?

I saw this in a column recently

The website goes on to credit films like “Talladega Nights” with bringing NASCAR into the forefront. I’ll pause right here for a moment to say that I have not met a NASCAR fan that liked Talladega Nights. In fact I don’t think there could have been a film that added more fuel to the stereotypical redneck image of NASCAR than the fictitious driver Ricky Bobby did. But back to the ABC series.

And for some reason I keep thinking about it.

Do race fans really have a problem with Talladega Nights? I'm a huge race fan. And I'm from the South. But I thought the movie was pretty good and very funny. I have seen it twice now and laughed thoroughly both times.

So I'm wondering what the problem is. It seems to me that if race fans couldn't see past the stereotypes and hyperbole to enjoy this movie, maybe race fans have a self-image problem that we really shouldn't. Can we not laugh at ourselves?

And if we're worried that people still think all race fans are rednecks, we shouldn't. The demographic studies reveal a wide and sophisticated fan base ... a person who thinks all race fans are rednecks is ignorant and they likely thought that anyway, regardless of Talladega Nights.

To me, saying you didn't like Talladega Nights because of the way it portrayed racing is like saying you didn't like Anchorman because of the way it portrayed local news casters. I don't think the movie ever intended to accurately portray anything. It's a comedy - and a rather ridiculous one. It's okay to laugh at Nascar stereotypes. :)

I'm just curious if most of you agree with the original comment that Nascar fans didn't like Talladega Nights. (Not because I want to argue it- everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I'm just curious as to how accurate that is...)

Well, to be honest with you, I didn't watch the movie. I don't care for any of Will Farrell's movies.

I thought it was funny, other than the kissing and almost kissing among the guys. Gary Cole as the dad was the best one in the movie.

And that's why I have never been able to sit thru it! The parts I have been able to sit still for were just that...ridiculous!
I felt it was geared to a ten yearolds mentality. My dislike has nothing to do with NASCAR...
Betsy:rolleyes:

havent watched it, dont want to wtach it, got it as a gift, it's still in DVD wrapping.

It's a fiction movie.......it's a comedy....it's not suppose to be the real thing. If people want the real thing go see a documentary (sp?)

Its ok. The first half was the best, the 2nd half of the movie kind of dragged on.

I thought the movie was stupid as heck, and I watched it after ****tails!

IMO the image portrayed is a poor one to me. I now live in the South, but I grew up in the North, so I have seen both sides of the version redneck. I know many self proclaimed "rednecks", and none of them are near like what that movie shows. That said it is a comedy, albeit not very funny to me, but it shows others that maybe haven't been to the South a bad view of the original NASCAR fan base. Makes it easy for those to make assumptions. The last NASCAR Primetime series show was about Dega infield. And basically everyone I know (yes even Southerners) were suprised that the show focused on the party style element. It looked like a bike ralley gone bad, and to me portrayed a horrible unfamily style atmosphere. I have never been to an actual race, but with the recent push by NASCAR to gain fans from other demographics and gain a family type image, that show looked really bad in that purpose. I like to party as much as the next person and what better place than the infield of a NASCAR track to do it (if I ever get the chance), but imo they should of saved those segments for a NASCAR Gone Wild dvd, lol

it was so funny and the grandma and kids were the best part- i also loved the music- steve earle is awsome :)

The way they filmed some of the race footage was really good actually. Like some of the overhead shots. If you get a chance check out the race footage in the special features section of the DVD. Even though it's a movie and the scenes are staged, the networks could probably get some good ideas from it as far as camera angles go. ESPN needs to get ideas from anywhere they can get them.

Will Ferrell fans loved it, nascar fans hated it. I think Will Ferrell is ridiculous.

I could not stand Blades of Gloy....i got talked in to going to see it....i think i still owe my buddy 6 bucks for that.....

I actually enjoyed the movie. It had some pretty funny parts IMO.

On the issue- I can understand if people just didn't like it, or thought it was stupid. That's another matter altogether.

Frank Beamer says_
They hit us," Beamer said. "Their backs are good, their receivers are good, Flynn was excellent, their second quarterback got us a couple times, their offensive line protected well. ... I'm not sure if this isn't the No. 1 football team in the country."

also says they are a college football monster!!!
