I saw this in a column recently
And for some reason I keep thinking about it.
Do race fans really have a problem with Talladega Nights? I'm a huge race fan. And I'm from the South. But I thought the movie was pretty good and very funny. I have seen it twice now and laughed thoroughly both times.
So I'm wondering what the problem is. It seems to me that if race fans couldn't see past the stereotypes and hyperbole to enjoy this movie, maybe race fans have a self-image problem that we really shouldn't. Can we not laugh at ourselves?
And if we're worried that people still think all race fans are rednecks, we shouldn't. The demographic studies reveal a wide and sophisticated fan base ... a person who thinks all race fans are rednecks is ignorant and they likely thought that anyway, regardless of Talladega Nights.
To me, saying you didn't like Talladega Nights because of the way it portrayed racing is like saying you didn't like Anchorman because of the way it portrayed local news casters. I don't think the movie ever intended to accurately portray anything. It's a comedy - and a rather ridiculous one. It's okay to laugh at Nascar stereotypes.
I'm just curious if most of you agree with the original comment that Nascar fans didn't like Talladega Nights. (Not because I want to argue it- everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I'm just curious as to how accurate that is...)
http://www.insiderracingnews.com/Writers/BW/082107.htmlThe website goes on to credit films like “Talladega Nights” with bringing NASCAR into the forefront. I’ll pause right here for a moment to say that I have not met a NASCAR fan that liked Talladega Nights. In fact I don’t think there could have been a film that added more fuel to the stereotypical redneck image of NASCAR than the fictitious driver Ricky Bobby did. But back to the ABC series.
