Okay folks, for all you that live in the area, there is going to be racing at the track on May 30 (Saturday) with two different types of cars. Super Late Models and late models. Here's the story from one of our local reporters who checked out the story...
Story by: Corey Latham -- [email protected]

North Wilkesboro, NC(May 21, 2009) -- Well, we've all heard the stories before. A potential buyer for the once great North Wilkesboro Speedway.

Every time the people involved have backed out or were never really as interested as we were to believe. A few years ago it went as far as having an actual schedule put out with over 25 events featuring touring series from all across the country. But it too fizzled when the investors backed out.

Since then, when rumors arise about the track, people just shake their head knowing it's not to be. But now Charles Collins(pictured at left in the center between Mike Robertson(left) and Ryan Robertson(right) in top photo), a Georgia business man with big plans for the speedway. And those plans include racing...........within the next two weeks. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Mr. Collins to find out exactly what is going on at the track and as a bonus we had the first Late Model on the track in over 15 years to boot.

Corey Latham(CL): First off who is Charles Collins?

Charles Collins(CC): I'm a contractor from Georgia, I've been building shopping centers and what not, and now I reside here in North Wilkesboro.

CL: How did you end up here?

CC: I've had this plan in the making for over 10 years. Not so much North Wilkesboro Speedway, but a resort, so now I've incorporated the Speedway into those plans. I had an investor a few years back, but he took his own route and moved on and is doing the same thing I'm doing down in Alabama. But I'm going to make this work right here.

CL: How did you get in touch with Bruton Smith, and are you buying the track outright?

CC: I've been in contact with Bruton before and we came to an agreement on a 3 month lease. I have the option to extend the lease or just buy it and that's what I intend to do, I'm buying the track. I have every intention to put a resort here. Water Park, Amusement Park, condos, all sorts of stuff.

CL: About the track, have any cars been on it and how is the track condition?

CC: We have not had any cars on the track at all, we are getting ready to make history in just a little while. I've had the president from another racing series here earlier today, and he was very impressed, he said the track looked better than some tracks they race on now. I had planned to put sealer on it, but the Goodyear man was out here today and said we just need to get some rubber on it. The rest of the track is good, the walls are fine, the catch fence is good, and the aluminum bleachers are just like the day after the last race in 1996. I'm working on building new bathrooms, but if they aren't ready in time for the race I'll bring in Port-a-Johns, it will be ready to go. A few coats of paint will be put on in the next few days and it will be ready.

CL: The race coming up is a Super-Late 200 lapper and a 100 lap Late-Model race. Being that this is one of the most historical tracks ever, why such short notice on the race, 2 weeks Isn't very long to promote it.

CC: I was going to have a tractor pull event here a few weeks ago, and the tractor pull people called me up just a few days before it saying that all the competitors were going to another event somewhere else. I had already spent quite a bit in advertising for the event and I needed to do something to calm the nay-sayers. So were going to have a race, and they will see we are for real.

CL: Alright, we have a had a couple of fiasco's in the past year about drivers getting paid for races. Is the purse your advertising guaranteed?

CC: It is. $7500 for the winner of the Super-Lates, and $4000 to the winner of the Late-Models. And of course it will pay on back through the field, I'll have that sheet for you Saturday.

CL: The date this race is on, is conflicting with every series and weekly track around, how are you going to get cars here?

CC: There are a lot Late-Model and Super-Late drivers around. You know It's an option to them. I'm already getting a lot of feedback on it, and have tons of drivers already calling. Even drivers from right here at the local tracks in the vicinity, some can't run every week anymore and they are coming to run at North Wilkesboro. Lot's of drivers are playing "pick-and-choose" where they race this year, and the track is localized so It's not a long haul for them. I've got some drivers that have called that are bringing both types of cars with them. If I get 20 cars in each race it will be a good race, and I'm expecting the crowd turnout to be good also.

CL: How about advertising, how is anyone going to know that there is a race on such short notice?

CC: It is being advertised on the radio right now, and starting next week it will be advertised heavily on cable TV. Word is getting around trust me, we are about to have our phones burst into flames. With the purse we're advertising coming straight out of the box, word is spreading fast.

CL: How about officials, who is running that aspect of it?

CC: I've got a meeting tomorrow with a bunch of officials, ones that have done it before from other local tracks. I'm not going to name them now until they have signed on, but they will handle everything that weekend inside the infield, it will be done right. We have already got the deal done with Goodyear, tires will be here, and fuel will be available at the track also.

CL: What kind of rules are they going to follow?

CC: The Supers will go by the PASS series rules, and the Late Models Stocks will follow the UARA rulebook. We are going to have the meeting and make a few changes that are things that could help everyone run without changing a lot, we'll have that info out on Saturday. The entry fee is $150, and that includes the driver and one crew member, all others in the pits will be $20.

CL: What about the future, are you going to schedule anymore races this year?

CC: My plan when I buy the track here shortly is to add the safer barriers, and to repave it. I have already talked with the paving company and they are ready to go when I tell them. As far as this year, we are going to see how it goes after the first race and then decide what we want to do, like I said I've already had other series here looking at it and they are ready, so for sure you will see more racing here.

As our conversation continued for the next hour or so, I was still wanting to know that this all was real. Mr. Collins proceeded to show me all the necessary permits related to having the event, and all the paperwork involved, it was for real. There are still things to be ironed out on the procedure of the event, but we'll have all of that first thing Saturday. As of right now, practice and qualifying will be held on Friday, with the main events rolling off at 12 noon Saturday, May 30th. I was harping hard on Mr. Collins about having the event on Sunday, as I had heard lots of interest from drivers who would run that day, but as of right now they are sticking to the original schedule.

We walked out to the track so I could have a closer look, I had been up to the track numerous times since it had closed, but not in the past year, I was expecting the worst. But the worst was no where to be found, the track looked the same as I remembered it that last day in 1996, when Jeff Gordon took home the final checkered flag. The pavement was my main concern, I figured with years of weather and no rubber to protect it the texture would be close to gravel. It was just fine, matter of fact a lot better than some tracks that have weekly racing now. Everything was good with the track and with a little paint and elbow grease, a race could be had today.

It did get even better, as we had to open up the back gate to let a car hauler in. Ryan Robertson was there in his brand new car, and he became the first driver to circle the track in a Late Model since the early 90's. The first few laps were rather dusty, as 14 years of dirt settling was getting quite a stirring up. But as the laps clicked off, the dust went away and it was just like ole' times, the roar of a race car at North Wilkesboro, as Robertson turned up the wick lap after lap. I encourage all fans to come out and enjoy the show, it's been 14 years in the making with lots of broken promises, but now it is going to happen.

More info on this event will be coming over the weekend here on RACE22.com ... For any questions regarding the race, Mr. Collins can be reached at the speedway at 336-818-0832.

It would take some work, but some crack sealer might do the trick.

Quite frankly Andy, your opinion doesn't mean squat. I know Corey and he's been reporting late model racing for a while now and he was there to witness one of our local boys. Why don't you get into your car and come on down for this race and report on it for yourself.

Whoa, calm down buddy. I'm just saying -- all the pictures and videos I've seen of the track show a track in horrible shape.

I don't know how -- but I'm astonished that the track repaired itself in just a few months!

As far as coming down to North Wilkesboro -- I'd be MORE than willing to come down to a race down there. I went to Rockingham, didn't I?

But, next weekend? Are you willing to pay for my gas and give me a place to stay?

I wouldn't be surprised if this track ends up on a UARA or ARCA schedule next year.

this is the best news i've heard in a while. the track may be in good shape, but the facilities or what ever you call it are gonna need some work. I'm in charlotte now. but my roots are deep in north wilkesboro. all of my family still stay in wilkes so not a month goes by that i don't drive right by the track come to think about i'm going up tommarow for a family reunion:)

I don't know. The bathrooms will need work, sure. But I don't know about the suites and some of the other stuff. Some of our local tracks have gone 30 years without upgrading facilities. A track's facilities goin 13 years without use is not far fetched.

Once they get the weeds pulled up off the surface (and that shouldn't be a big task), maybe put some sealer down and get some rubber built up, the track will be fine.

They've gone 40 years without repaving ODS. :idunno:

Chuck, why not see if you can attend this race and then report on it. There are many competing tracks on that day, but the promoter said that he's been getting lots of calls from drivers. Maybe there will be enough of the part timers who can make the show and put on a good one. I'm hoping this comes off fine and that it could lead to a longer season for the track.

I miss that old track. I used to live 15 minutes south of there. On Sunday mornings of raceday, I used to wake up early to the wonderful smell of fried chicken. Fried chicken and rice and gravy was a every Sunday thing at my house, but on raceday dad got up earlier to prepare our racetrack fest. As I said earlier, we lived really close to North Wilkesboro, and was able to make it to Sunday school and on to the race track to catch the pre-race activities. It saddened me that money grubbing Bruton Smith closed the place, never to see anything happen again till this year. I hope who ever is taking it over does well.

North Wilkesboro, NC ~ Race cars were scheduled to hit the track today for testing at North Wilkesboro Speedway, but unfortunately rain throughout the area will keep cars from being able to get on the track.

Testing for today has been canceled and without being able to test Charles Collins, the man in charge of this event at the North Wilkesboro Speedway Resort has made the decision to postpone activities at the historic track. The $7,500.00 to win Super Late Model race and the $4,000.00 to win Late Model Stock Car race has been moved to Saturday, June 13th and Sunday, June 14th.

No further information is available at this time, but Charles Collins and the staff at North Wilkesboro can be reached at 336.818.0832.

When more information is available RACE22.com will do our best to keep you up to date on all information supplied to us by the staff at the track, but RACE22.com is not affiliated with North Wilkesboro Speedway Resort in anyway and all correspondence for this event should be directed to Charles Collins and the staff at the North Wilkesboro Speedway Resort.

Bruton Smith: WTF mate?

Racing at North Wilkesboro? Nobody was more surprised than Speedway Motorsports Inc. chairman Bruton Smith when a reporter suggested there would be racing at North Wilkesboro Speedway this weekend [May 29-30]. "You told me something I didn't know," Smith said. He paused, then added, "You sure? Anybody going to be there?" If anybody knew the answer it would be Smith, who owns the track that hosted two Sprint Cup races a year until 1996. It has been silent since. "I own the place and it's for sale, but I did not know there was going to be anything there," Smith said. "The last time I saw it, it was just slowly returning to the earth."(ESPN)(5-28-2009)

Bruton Smith: WTF mate?

Well i reckon Mr. Collins didn't clear this with Bruton. Collins is leasing the track with the intent to buy it but probably not for the 12 million asking price.

Bruton is the one that is slowly returning to the earth.

North Wilkesboro

Don't get your hopes up for North Wilkesboro, folks. The track has no power except in the office. So...no caution lights, etc. The concession stands will not pass inspection. Much work is needed before power will be restored. The person who wrote the article cited here may be singing a different song now after interviewing other folks. The "promotor" has no equipment to run a race and was scrambling to find officials. He has, in the months, canceled two concerts, a tractor pull and maybe another event. The race was postponed but don't hold your breath if it's run. The only event he has held, in his three months, was an "open house," and he charged $10. Total ticket sales were...17.

You know, I talked to a lot of drivers on and off the record about North Wilkesboro last week at Hampton. A lot of them told me they'd love to race there.

A lot more has been written locally about this effort and once again, those who have hoped that we would see racing there again, are hoping for the best, but looking at this being just another attempt. There's still plenty of optimism, but it's fading fast. If he doesn't have a race next weekend, most everyone will believe that it really isn't going to happen. What this guy needs is a good promoter and put forth the funds he promises. I just think that he believes that he can do it all himself and that the track will see itself.

Oh boy, I just got back from the coast and have been reading up on this from the local POV with my man Corey who is the reporter in all of this. Seems that he is being forced to stop commenting on certain things from a legal standpoint. I see this going in one direction and then bang, it changes directions again. It doesn't appear as though this promoter actually has any money, at least he doesn't have any where this track is concerned. He owes a lot of money to local people and they are having a very hard time collecting. But it gets better. Corey is now insinuating that we are all looking in the wrong direction! He is now saying that we should be looking outside the box and is pointing the way at Smitty. Smitty has been saying all along that he has no idea what is going on there, but Collins has a three month lease on the track, and there has been one family team with four cars that have tested there. Goodyear has been there and there has been insurance given to the track and drivers. For Smitty to say he has no idea is a bit shady to say the least. Corey is suggesting that we wait to see what might transpire with Smitty and his SMI in the near future.

Good Gawd, what's next?

Buckaroo,

Have you heard anything new about this? Now that I have no job and no commitments, I'm thinking about coming down. I don't see a website for the track or anything. So, if you're outside of that area, you really have no access to information.

If Collins is serious about re-opening, I'd have no problem putting together a website for the track or anything. But right now, it just doesn't seem for real... unless you know something I don't.

The website is http://www.northwilkesborospeedwayresort.com Its up today but was down for about a week.

If you want to read what the locals are saying go to http://www.gowilkes.com click on discussions then community voice. Look for the thread about the speedway.

Andy, I'm still on this 24/7 because the main reporter in this case is on one of my local boards. Here's something new about this that you won't read anywhere else, well maybe not. Collins first idea was for a reality show with women drivers. He asked that any women drivers who wanted to be on the show to post an entry fee which was just south of three grand. One of our local girls wrote him a check and that was back in February I think. Anyway, since that time, his plans for that show have been cut and as such, she was looking for a refund. She has gotten a few checks from him, all of which have bounced. Nothing new has been reported since the postponement of the late model races scheduled for May 30, and rescheduled for June 13/14. Though there has been testing by a couple of teams at the track, if I were you, I wouldn't waste my time coming down here unless you are doing an investigating column. Also, you can see the test runs at the North Wilkesboro My Space web site. There you can see tests run by a local boy and his family of the late model cars. (Just do a google search for NW myspace page).

BTW Andy, did you give any thought to my idea for a job? I'm serious, though it could take a few years, you are just what is hot in radio these days. Some people need a partner, but you don't.

Only other sports I know anything about are hockey and some football. Baseball and basketball are beyond me.

I'm actually talking with a local paper about doing all their motorsports coverage, as well as baseball

and ice hockey at the Waldorf arena (I didn't know this existed:confused:)

http://www.myspace.com/northwilkesborospeedway in case you're looking for it. I read Wynns links -- based off those and off what you're saying, I think I'll go ahead and save up for the USAR/ARCA Rockingham Doubleheader instead.

Look, you're very young, get out there and learn. The big three in this country are football, baseball and basketball. After that, the other sports, including our beloved sport, is secondary. But if it's racing that you want to do, and that is limiting your area, try and hook up with one of the national media. If you want to write, contact those that are in print, but again, I think that you would work well in the voice media, so MRN, PRN, along with ESPN and others would be the place to look. Remember, you aren't going to start at the top and getting a foot in the door is the first step. It might also help to get some sort of degree or associate degree in journalism, but you can't let that stop you. Keep bothering people in the area that you want to work. You might piss them off, but maybe sooner or later, they might give you that one shot that you need.
