Years ago we purchased a scanner. Took it to a few races, and despite help from several sitting around us, never could figure out how to use it. We're getting ready for a cross country trip to Darlington and need to get a new one. We're more interested in listening to the MRN broadcast than the conversations between the drivers and their pit crews. Anyone care to recommend one? Thanks.

If you are an infrequent attending fan, I'd simply rent one from one of their haulers at the track. They will give you a unit that is set up completely for the race.
If it is only the MRN broadcast that you want, a simple AM/FM headset will work.

What model is the scanner? I'm sure the manual can be found on line. Programming one really isn't all that difficult.
But yeah, if all your after is MRN, any FM radio will give you that. Heck, MRN may have a cell phone app. Get a pair of earbuds and put on some $15 hearing protectors from any sporting goods store.

Scanner long gone. Even with the manual nobody could program/figure it out.
Is MRN the only option for "at track" broadcasts? Only FM.
With a scanner, you can get Fox and NBC, along with NASCAR's race control channel.

They do have an app but the delay would be annoying to say the least. Now that I think of it, even the AM/FM option would not be desirable because of the delay. Not sure if anyone remembers the old Winston Cup Radio Headsets from many years ago. I still have a couple of those laying around somewhere. Back then a delay wasn't an issue. Today's broadcasts are different.
I changed my mind over what I initially said. I'd go with the track rental of the scanner if you, @19USMC69, don't attend many races. RE has trailers set up all around the track. I'd go that route. I think that you can even pre-reserve on their website but fighting today's crowds at the track shouldn't be an issue.
I bought a refurbished uniden bc125at for the price of three rentals a year or so ago, along with a headset. Took ten minutes to set it up, and no more 20 to 30 minute wait to return the thing after the race. Which means the difference of reaching the highway in ten minutes, or get stuck in the parking for over an hour.

I would recommend buying a scanner if you plan on going to more than one race. It's $40 to rent, or you could buy one (many good options on ebay under $80) so buying would definitely be the way to go, as long as you feel confident you can get it set up correctly.
Thanks for all the input. Much appreciated. Taking everything into consideration I opted to purchase another scanner. Ordered a Uniden BC75XLT from Amazon. Reading the reviews and the many of the questions/responses, I feel pretty comfortable this will work out. We'll see.
