Roush Racing has withdrawn its No. 06 Ford from the entry list for this weekend's Bass Pro Shops 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway after driver David Ragan wasn't approved to compete on 1.5-mile tracks at the Nextel Cup level.

The team announced last week that Ragan would run both the Craftsman Truck Series race and the Cup race at Atlanta as he prepares to take over for Mark Martin in the team's No. 6 entry next season.

First, though, Ragan needed approval from NASCAR to step up to that level. Currently, he's only cleared to race on tracks 1 mile or less in length in Cup. The 20-year-old has made just two Cup starts thus far, at Dover and this past Sunday at Martinsville.

Ragan was involved in two accidents at Dover, where he finished 42nd after completing just 46 laps. He finished all 500 laps at Martinsville on Sunday, but angered a number of his fellow competitors in the process after making contact with Dale Jarrett and Ken Schrader, among others.

"Currently he's approved to participate at NASCAR tracks 1 mile in length or less," NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said Tuesday of Ragan's Cup eligibility. "There is an approval process in place and his status will continue to be reviewed on a weekly basis.

"We take a lot of things into consideration: Experience, qualifications, that type of thing. There's a NASCAR committee that convenes on this each week and they'll continue to review any application that he makes regarding the rest of the series."

While Ragan is cleared to race the truck series event at Atlanta, he was not on the entry list as of Tuesday afternoon. That, though, could still change by the time practice begins on Friday.

good news indeed. david regan shouldn't be allow at the cup level at all.

Good Call NASCAR!!

Not much different than what NASCAR did to Justin Labonte & Jason Jarrett a few years agoe.

I tend to agree as well...he was in way, way over his head last weekend in the cup car.

Good luck to 'em to in the future, however.

maybe Roush should look to F1 like Ganassi. :)

Talent is running a little thin nowadays. Too many veterans have retired and too many young'uns have moved up too fast.

There's always Paul Tracy <g> Hmm, he's been in a few crashes himself this year....

I do feel sorry for David and wish him well in the future. I don't think NASCAR should allow any rookies to start their career during the chase. There's just too much on the line to be dealing with inexperienced drivers.

Ganassi's NASCAR career as an owner is about as impressive as his career was as a driver.

I'm glad to hear it as well, he could really hurt someone out there. I've said it before and will say it again. There are to many cup guys driving in the Busch series. There should be young guys in those seats, and I thing the cup owners are figuring this out becouse there are no replacements for their cup rides.

How do you expect him to get any better without seat time? Then Nascar lets almanwacker race? Just more inconsistancy on their part.

Let him race. He isnt any worse then JJ Yeley

I agree.

He should get seat time but not in Atlanta or other high speed tracks, yet.

 The seat time should be in Busch and Trucks. You don't start at the top.

Argue for him all you want but I thought his performance on Sunday speaks for itself.

Apparently, Allmendinger gets to, though. Just like FIMZ said... another Nascar inconsistency. Oh yeah..he's also already been cleared to race Texas, too ??? HAHAHA. That's BS.

No not at all, apples and oranges. Allmendinger is a provin winner in a top racing serise. He's won in Champ car as well as a Toyota Atlantic serise champion. He is a seasoned racing professional and has the ability to jump into Cup with the other pro's there. David on the other hand proved that he needs a little more seat time before competing in Cup.

(Disclamer: I am not a big fan of open wheel drivers coming to NASCAR. They chose the open wheel ranks, I say stay there. If you wanted to race stockcars you should have been racing them a long time ago, you drivers are coming over purely becouse of the money.)

I was replying to an argument that you get seat time in trucks or busch before driving cup. If that's the criteria, Ragan is leaps & bounds ahead of Allmendinger.

David Ragan hasn't proven anything in any form of racing competition except that reality show.

Again....................I was replying to a post regarding whether someone should drive busch & truck prior to racing cup. I never said anything about the ability of Ragan at all. Apparently, you took the time to read ONLY the last seven words of my post.
